POINT PLEASANT — For some, there’s nothing better than curling up with a nice warm blanket and a good book.

Those with the Mason County Public Library are encouraging this behavior, in conjunction with the West Virginia Library Commission and the West Virginia Center for the Book, as they begin “West Virginia Reads 150,” a reading program challenging groups of West Virginians to collectively read 150 books throughout the year.

In honor of the state of West Virginia’s sesquicentennial, or 150th, birthday on June 20, 2013, locals, either on their own or with a group of up to 15 members, are encouraged to join in with this initiative. Groups must have a team leader and a team name, and can include family, friends, co-workers, book clubs, classmates, seniors, 4-H groups, church groups, and more. Kids of any age are also invited to participate. It was stated if the child is too young to read on their own, they can be read too.

Library Clerk Cindy Williams stated one of the Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) clubs have already signed up to participate and several other individuals have also picked up information for their respective groups.

Williams discussed the program, saying it began in Kanawha County and several libraries across the state have joined in as well. Williams said once a member of a group reads a book, they are to report it to their team leader, who will then report it to the library, who will keep a running total throughout the year.

“Anything that encourages people to read, we’re all for it,” Williams said. Williams added that they’ve also encouraged local schools to participate as well.

Books eligible for this program may be in any format, including a printed book, e-book, or a downloadable text. Magazines and newspapers do not count. Books can also be on any topic, fiction or non-fiction, and do not have to be from the library. The only requirement listed regarding books is they must be read between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2013.

Williams also said the library will host an celebratory event for all the readers at the end of the year. For a full list of participating libraries in other West Virginia counties, visit www.librarycommission.wv.gov.
