WEST COLUMBIA — What started as a domestic violence call ended with the arrest of a West Columbia man for possession of drugs.
Around 6:40 a.m. Thursday, Deputy Terry Powell responded to a home on Sassafras Road after a dispatcher from Mason County 911 received a call from a woman stating that a man was trying to kill her.
When Powell arrived, he spoke with the alleged victim and two other people, then proceeded to check the home.
Charles C. Sullivan, 40, was placed in custody after he tried to flee from the residence through a back door, according to a criminal complaint. It was then brought to Powell’s attention that Sullivan was possibly in possession of heroin.
As other officers arrived to assist Powell, Sullivan gave permission for his home to be searched. Inside, deputies found Xanax and marijuana seeds as well as drug paraphernalia. Deputies later found that Sullivan was in possession of heroin.
He has been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance - Xanax, possession with intent to manufacture marijuana and possession with intent to deliver heroin.
According to state statute, it is unlawful for any person to manufacture or deliver or to possess with the intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance.
Sullivan was taken before Magistrate Cheryl Ross for arraignment. Ross set bond at $150,000. He was taken to the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville.
Officers who assisted Powell in the search included Lt. Curt McConihay, Chief Deputy Jeff Fields, Sheriff David Anthony, Capt. Carl Peterson, Sgt. Robbie Fruth and Cpl. Billy Gritt along with his K-9 partner, Max.
