POINT PLEASANT — A Leon man was taken into custody Tuesday on a charge stemming from an accident in February.
Jarrod L. Donahew, 27, was arrested by Cpl. Andy Varian of the Mason County Sheriff’s Department on a charge of reckless operation causing injury. He was taken before Magistrate Cheryl Ross and posted a $5,000 property bond.
The penalty for reckless operation causing injury is a jail term of no less than 10 days to a maximum of six months and/or a fine of $50-$1,000.
On Feb. 3, Donahew was traveling south on W.Va. 62 in his 2004 Hyundai when he struck a 1996 Nissan driven by Jessica Durst of Leon, who was driving north, head-on. Donahew allegedly was in the process of passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone about a quarter of a mile south of Eight Mile Road when the accident happened.
Heavy damage was reported to both vehicles, and both drivers were entrapped for several minutes until firefighters from two fire departments arrived to extricate them with the “jaws of life.”
Both suffered serious injuries and were flown to Cabell Huntington Hospital by helicopter.
Capt. Carl Peterson investigated the accident.
Another man, Gregory A. Messer, 47, of Dailey, was arrested Monday by Capt. Charlie Stearns on a warrant for malicious wounding and wanton endangerment.
On Jan. 20, Sgt. Steven Greene responded to a home on Cornstalk Road in Southside for a domestic violence call. When he arrived, he found that the victim had been injured when Messer allegedly struck her with a handgun after firing the gun multiple times at various objects.
Malicious wounding is a shooting, stabbing, cut or other wound made by any person against another or by any means that could cause bodily injury with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or kill. Wanton endangerment is the performance of any act with a firearm that creates a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury to another.
Messer appeared before Magistrate Gail Roush for arraignment.
