NEW HAVEN — Principals, committee members and students from six Mason County schools presented reports of their respective schools regarding how they’re doing in testing and what improvements they would like to see.
Local School Improvement Committee (LSIC) members from the Mason County Career Center, Point Pleasant Intermediate, Point Pleasant Primary, Point Pleasant Junior Senior High, New Haven Elementary and Wahama Junior Senior High schools used a slide show to demonstrate the improvements and discuss what needs to be improved in the schools during a special Board of Education meeting Tuesday at New Haven Elementary School.
For the first time, the Mason County Career Center presented an LSIC report. Using data from 2007-08, Ruth Caplinger, director of vocational education, said it was difficult to track graduates, but the school had 59 students complete their respective programs, with 54 of those having positive placement. She said 60 percent of the graduates are working in their field of study and 67 percent are continuing their education in their respective fields.
She added that the school will be assigned testing for an e-business experience for which students will bring in a resume, do a job interview and have their skills evaluated before a panel of judges consisting of members from different industries. The Mason County Career Center currently has an enrollment of 862 students.
“The students who are there want to be there,” Caplinger told the board.
Paul Ashby, principal at Point Pleasant Intermediate School, and music teacher Sarah Thompson presented their report that included a new reward program called Kids of Character. Ashby also reported that the school’s wellness committee is working on putting in a walking track.
Thompson said the school would like to have another secretary, an assistant principal and a full-time counselor to serve the needs of the students.
Tim Click, principal of Point Pleasant Primary School, was introduced by student Ben Browning. Click said that if the students at his school meet the 80 percent mark in testing, he will fulfill a special request for the students.
He also told the board that PPPS needs an awning for the front of the building for the bus area as well as lockers for students.
Superintendent Dr. Larry Parsons asked Click to look into prices of the two projects.
Student government representatives from Point Pleasant Junior Senior High School presented their report with the aid of Principal Bill Cottrill, who said one problem the school is continuing to work on is attendance.
Principal Cameron Moffett of New Haven Elementary School told the board that there are spots in the school’s roof that need to be replaced as well as lighting for the front of the building. He also said the repair to the roof would build the morale of the staff and students.
Wahama Junior Senior High School Principal David Graham said his school would like to redevelop the athletic area in Hartford with two new tennis courts and a baseball and softball fields. He said the area is centrally located for the communities of the Wahama area and that it would include the residents of Hartford.
He also asked for a commons area for the students to use when the weather is favorable.
The next meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 23 at the Mason County Career Center.
