ASHTON — At Thursday evening’s meeting of the Mason County Board of Education, board members approved an exemption request from policy number 5136, Wireless Communication Devices, for the Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School (PPJSHS) Leadership Team.
As previously reported, this exemption request asked to allow 9-12 grade students at PPJSHS to be able to use their cell phones between classes, as well as during class as an instructional tool, as opposed to students only being permitted to use their cell phones before and after school and during their lunch period.
PPJSHS Principal William Cottrill also further explained this request at a prior meeting, stating if the request was approved, cell phone use would be monitored, and if the new privilege became an issue, it would be revoked. Board members also stated they would be interested in seeing some kind of data later in the school year to see if the exemption to this policy has either benefited the students or become more of a hindrance.
Also speaking at the meeting was Ashton Elementary School Principal Alesia Green. Board members discussed the upcoming excess levy and soccer fields for Mason County Schools.
Board members also approved the following agenda items:
Approved Minutes, Agenda #12-13, October 9, 2012. Approved Gallipolis K-Mart, Mason Tudor’s Biscuit, and Hurricane Little Caesar’s Pizza, as approved work based learning businesses, effective immediately through September 30, 2013.
