POINT PLEASANT — A man from Africa remains in the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville as a result of a multi-state investigation after he was arrested for receiving and transferring stolen items in Point Pleasant.
According to Point Pleasant Police Chief Ernie Watterson, the police department received a telephone call Friday from officials with Audio Visual Rentals in Enfield, Conn., about five computer projectors they had shipped to a business in Point Pleasant.
Watterson said the owner, Al Testoni, had discovered the projectors had been paid for by a stolen Discover credit card.
During his investigation, Sgt. Bryan Morrow found that the person for whom he was looking, Danis Mensah, 25, of Bronx, N.Y., and Guana, Africa, apparently had been in contact with a Point Pleasant resident about picking up the projectors and holding them until he arrived.
Morrow learned that Mensah was flying to West Virginia from New York and, by working with airport security and Cpl. K.M. Gilley of the West Virginia State Police, the officers were able to observe when he arrived in the state.
The officers arrested Mensah without incident Saturday. During their investigation, police discovered he was in the United States on a passport and visa and was in violation of its rules.
According to Sgt. E.B. Starcher of the state police, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency was notified. The agency has sent a detention order to the Western Regional Jail to keep Mensah in custody.
Watterson said the Connecticut State Police also is conducting an investigation.
“Sgt. Morrow worked very hard on this case,” he added.
The case remains under investigation with more charges pending.
