Late goal lifts RedStorm past Vanguard
Special to OVP
COLUMBIA, Ky. - Senior forward Richard Isberner, who had been sidelined for each of the past two games with nagging leg and hip injuries, scored with 46 seconds remaining in regulation to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the University of Rio Grande to a 3-2 win over Vanguard (Calif.) University, Wednesday night, in men’s soccer action at Lindsey Wilson College’s Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
The RedStorm, who were ranked No. 2 in the NAIA coaches poll released Monday, improved to 4-1 with a fourth straight victory.
The Lions dropped to 1-4-1 with the loss.
After a scorless first half, Rio struck for a pair of goals in a span of 30 seconds just over 10 minutes into the second period.
Senior forward Rafael Maccauro scored an unassisted goal at 55:16 and junior midfielder Maxi Viera followed with an unassisted marker of his own just 30 seconds later to make it 2-0.
Vanguard responded moments later, though, thanks to an unassisted goal by Kevin Cornwall and knotted the score at 2-2 when Cornwall scored again off an assist from Christopher Marvin at 79:22.
Isberner, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who was a first team All-American and the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year in 2011, headed his game-winner past Lions net-minder Alejandro Figueroa inside the final minute of the match to produce the dramatic win.
Rio Grande outshot the Lions, 15-11.
Senior goalkeeper Jack Marchant had a pair of saves in the winning effort, while Figueroa was credited with five stops in the loss for Vanguard.
Rio Grande returns to action on Friday, traveling to Cumberland (Tenn.) University for its Mid-South Conference opener. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. EST.
The RedStorm will be without the services of Viera on Friday after he received a pair of yellow cards in the victory. Eight yellow cards were issued in the match, including five against Rio.
