POINT PLEASANT — The Mason County Commission has signed a contract regarding the design phase for the renovation of the old Point Pleasant Hardware Building.

At their regular meeting Thursday, Mason County Commissioners Rick Handley, Miles Epling and Bob Baird voted to accept the contract with Chapman Technical Group of St. Albans. The contract will cost a total of $112,000 - this does not include construction, a phase which could come after the design is completed. The commission has voted to move the Mason County Sheriff’s Department into the first floor of the building and use additional space for storage.

Commissioners also opened two sealed bids for a complete overhaul of the basketball courts near Point Pleasant Intermediate School. This work will include tearing out the old court completely due to an unstable surface, building a new base, repaving and repainting the area.

There were two bidders for the job, Myers Paving with a cost of $56,000, and Asphalt Contractors and Site Work Inc. with a cost of $57,943. Commissioners voted to accept the bid from Myers Paving with work expected to take place and be completed next month.

Other business:

Commissioners also approved signing a resolution to approve the change of control of Suddenlink (currently owned by Cequel Communications Holdings, LLC) to Nespressor Acquisition Corporation. The commission signed the resolution due to it having a franchise agreement with the company, just as many municipal governments do throughout Mason County and the surrounding areas. Gerlach stressed the section of Suddenlink’s request for the resolution that said “it has no existing plans to discontinue any existing service or to implement any changes in rates, terms or conditions in connection with the transaction.”

Commissioners also welcomed and honored Mason County Fair Royalty, including Fair Queen Madison Crank, First Runner-up and Miss Congeniality Kelsey Zuspan, Second Runner-up Kayla Thomas and Third Runner-up Lori Wooten.

Accepted the resignation of Floyd Sayre as citizen representative on the 911 committee and appointed Jimmie Wood as his replacement.

Appointed Matt Clark as the new democratic fiduciary commissioner.

Approved emergency absentee voting procedures allowing staff from the Mason County Clerk’s Office to visit voters who cannot make it to a polling place (typically due to illness or hospitalization). Workers can travel up to 35 miles from the county seat to allow that resident to vote. County Clerk Diana Cromley presented the policy.

Commissioners tabled an appointment to the Mason County PSD until their Aug. 30 meeting.

County Administrator John Gerlach spoke to commissioners about possibly putting in an ATM inside the courthouse which would allow easy access to cash for those there to pay taxes, fines and licensing fees.

Commissioners set their September meetings for 4 p.m., Sept. 13 and 27.
