POINT PLEASANT — What is the least common multiple of 18 and 28? Answer: 252. What number should come next in this pattern: 1, 4, 10, 19, 31? Answer: 46.
These are just two of hundreds of math problems that students from the fourth through 12th grades answered Friday during Math Field Day at Trinity United Methodist Church.
According to coordinator Jamei Wood, this year’s competition was the toughest they had had in recent years, forcing many students to participate in tie-breaker questions.
“They were so close,” Wood said.
Students were given problems in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus for the competition. Students in fourth through ninth grades were given a written test, mental math estimation and mental math exact.
Ninth grade students also had to do short answer problems. High school students were not only given a written exam, but also had to complete a short answer test and compete in teams.
Wood said the team competition allowed students to work together to get prepared for when the top 10 winners go to the regional competition.
“The team is made up of students from all three high schools,” she said. “This will help them compete in a more uniform manner in representing Mason County. This is very exciting.”
This year’s team will consist of Pablo Mejia, Jamie Bush, Treg Dotson and Brooke Dean from Point Pleasant High School; Elizabeth Butcher, Patrick Flora, Katlyn Stanley and Travis Bowman from Hannan High School; and Joey Barton and Desiree Sines from Wahama High School. Alternates are Alex Edmunds from Hannan, Chris Estrada from Point Pleasant and Austin Gilbert and Dave Greene from Wahama.

The principals of these schools received trophies on behalf of their school.
