Dear Editor,
Recently I was in town for my 50th high school reunion and noticed many changes. Some, such as new schools, a larger hospital, the river museum, amphitheater, and art gallery showed that local folks cared for the area. Unfortunately, others did not.
A house badly in need of paint near the road in the English Court area and several houses in dire need of repair on Viand Street near the heart of town severely detract from the overall tidiness I remembered from half a century ago. I was told these structures had been in their current condition for some time. Frankly, some appeared to be health hazards and beyond repair. However these houses fell into disrepair, it is a shame the owners cannot or will not repair them, or city code will not allow them to be razed. They detract significantly from what is otherwise a very pleasant town.
