MASON — At the most recent meeting of the Mason Town Council, members discussed looking into a vagrancy ordinance for the town.

Mayor Mindy Kearns stated there was recently a couple who had pitched a tent near the park, and town officials informed the couple they were not permitted to stay there. It was agreed at the meeting that due to this incident the town would look into adopting an ordinance to prevent situations like this in the future. Kearns stated they currently have ordinances from a few other towns to serve as a guide on how to write this ordinance for Mason. Kearns also said the ordinance would have to go through their attorney before anything was officially in place.

Also attending the meeting was Jason Smithson, a representative from Baker Engineering. Smithson addressed the council on a solution to repair a drainage problem on Maple Street. A motion was made by Councilman Marty Yeager to accept Smithson’s proposal, with a second from Councilman James Pauley. Motion carried. Regarding this solution, Kearns stated Baker Engineering assessed the situation, but there wasn’t a set date of when it would be taken care of. Councilwoman Sarah Stover also brought about a discussion on filling several pot holes on Fruth Lane. Kearns stated work on this road will be completed next week.

It was also reported at the meeting that Police Officers David Haught and David Woolard recently attended training classes. Kearns stated these training classes were not regarding any special training, but classes that merely kept them up to date and training which allowed the two officers to meet certain hour requirements.

Also making personal appearances at the meeting were Larry Daniel, Luther Tucker, Patty Allensworth, and Donna Vickers. Tucker and Vickers both stated at the meeting they were against a change in trash pick-up. Daniel stated the next Neighborhood Watch Meeting will be at 6 p.m. on July 10, in the town’s community room. Daniel also volunteered for the position of Floodplain manager. It was reported there was one day of training a year for this position. Councilman Yeager made a motion to accept Daniel, with a second from Councilman Nick Northup. Motion carried. Kearns stated this position is normally filled by a council member or the mayor, but the state recently changed some of the details of the position, which Kearns said is still fairly new, and a volunteer was asked to fill this role.

In other council news, Councilwoman Michelle Pearson announced the Fourth of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Anderson Street and will continue to the park, with other activities taking place at the park. Recorder Deann Russell introduced a fourth revision to the budget. Councilman Northup made a motion to accept the budget with a second from Councilwoman Stover. Motion carried. The minutes from the meeting on June 4, 2012, were read and accepted with a motion made by Councilman Northup and a second from Councilwoman Stover. Several bills were also presented for payment and were accepted with a motion from Councilman Northup and a second from Councilman Pauley. Both motions carried.

In addition to Mayor Minder Kearns, council members present were James Pauley, Nick Northup, Marty Yeager, Michelle Pearson, Sarah Stover, and Recorder Deann Russell.

The Town of Mason council will meet again at 6:30 p.m. on July 5, in the town hall.
