Charles Rowsey Withers, 89, of Apple Grove, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 24, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born December 12, 1922, a son of the late Charles Robert Withers and Emma (Rowsey) Withers.

Charles was the last surviving charter member of the Ashton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. A proud veteran of World War II, Charles served as a surgical tech aboard the John L. Clem Hospital Ship in the European Theater of Operations. He received several decorations and citations for his service to his country.

Charles graduated from Hannan High School and Marshall University and was employed for thirty years with Mason County Schools as a teacher, principal, and Superintendent of Schools. After his retirement, Charles worked as a boilermaker with Local 667.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons, Charles Withers II and Samuel Withers; sister, Mary Ann Lilly; grandson, Adam Woyan; great-grandson, Jeb Adkins; and son-in-law, Larry Stover.

Charles is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rosa Gillispie Withers; daughters and sons-in-laws, Linda and Bill Tatterson, Suzanne and Johnny Woyan, and Janet Withers; daughter-in-law, Brenda Withers; brother, Bill (JoAnn) Withers; and sister, Helen Irvin. Also surviving him are nine grandchildren, Charles (Kim) Withers III, Abbie (Scott) Parsons, Kurt (Jennifer) Withers, Craig (Jill) Tatterson, Mark (Angelica) Tatterson, Jon (Amber) Tatterson, Jennifer (Jason) Adkins, Josh (Shelly) Woyan, and Sarah (Trent) Doss; 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild due in November.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the Deal Funeral Home in Point Pleasant, with Max Spurlock and Ronnie Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Withers Memorial Gardens in Apple Grove, with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 23 of Point Pleasant, and the WV Army Honor Guard of Kingwood. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
