School board approves policies

POINT PLEASANT — At the most recent meeting of the Mason County Board of Education, board members approved several policies for the 2012-13 school year.

The approved policies include the following:

Members of the board also approved the following agenda and personal items:

Approved Minutes, Agenda #11-47, May 22, 2012. Approved Minutes, Agenda #11-48, May 29, 2012. Approve Minutes, Agenda #11-49, May 29, 2012. Approved the out of state travel for FBLA 9-12 grade students, Lortia Carr, Casby Meadows, and Kathy Rollins, to travel to San Antonio, Texas, June 28 thru July 3, 2012, to attend the FBLA National Leadership Conference. Funding sources will be School Levy, Vocational, Step 7, FBLA, State Vocational Travel, and private monies. Approved the out of state travel for Carla King and Kathy Rollins to attend the National SREB HSTW and Technology Centers That Work Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, from July 11 thru 14, 2012. Funding source will be the TCTW Grant. Approved Clarence Rice, Patricia Rice, and Kathryn Rollins as approved drivers for the remainder of the 2011-12 school year. Their driving records have been approved by the WV Department of Motor Vehicles.

Approved the employment of William Richards, Music/Band/Choir Teacher, Ashton Elementary/Hannan Jr/Sr High, job #216-227-P and 501-625-P, effective 2012-13 school year. County will be the funding source. Approved the employment of Amy Grady, Grade 6 Teacher, Roosevelt Elementary, Job #213-516-P, effective for the 2012-13 school year. Ms. Grady is being employed from the Reduction In Force list. County will be the funding source.

Approved the employment of Heather Thompson, Grade 6 Teacher, New Haven Elementary, Job #210-374-P, effective 2012-13 school year. Ms. Thompson is being employed from the Reduction In Force List. County will be the funding source. Approved the employment of Rebecca Roll, Grade 5 Teacher, New Haven Elementary, Job #210-372-P, effective for the 2012-13 school year. Ms. Roll is being employed from the Reduction In Force List. County will be the funding source. Approved the employment of Kayla Tucker, Special Education Teacher, LD/BD/MI, New Haven Elementary, Job #210-380-P, effective 2012-13 school year. Special Education will be the funding source. Board members Shobe recused himself from this item.

Approved the transfer of Elaine Matheny, Science Teacher, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, to Technology Integration Specialist, Central Office Itinerant, Job #001-034-I, effective 2012-13 school year. Step 7 will be the funding source. Approved to adjust the assignment location of Joseph Pemberton from Assistant Principal, Hannan Jr/Sr High School, to Assistant Principal/Teacher, Alternative School, effective 2012-13 school year. County will be the funding source. Approved to post the position of Maintenance Director, effective July 1, 2012. County will be the funding source.

Accepted the resignation of Benjamin Grady, Jr Varsity Baseball, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective June 8, 2012. Accepted the resignation of Benjamin Grady, Year Book Advisor, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, effective July 10, 2012. Accepted the resignation of Keith Taylor, Head Varsity Football Coach, Hannan Jr/Sr High, effective June 1, 2012. Approved the employment of Brian Allen, Seventh Grade Boys Basketball Coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, Job #503-211-S, for the 2012-13 school year. County will be the funding source. Approved the employment of John Fields, Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, Job #502-117-S, for the 2012-13 school year. County will be the funding source. Approved the employment of Judith Camden, Head Varsity Volleyball Coach, Hannan Jr/Sr High, Job #501-020-S, for the 2012-13 school year. County will be the funding source.

Approved the lowest submitted bid of $2,289.99 per month, from Republic Services/Allied Waste, for trash removal for Ashton Elementary, Beale Elementary, Hannan Jr/Sr High, Leon Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, MCCC, Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High, Alternative School, and Wahama Jr/Sr High, for the 2012-13 school year. County monies will be the funding source. Approved the ratification of orders issued, transfers, and supplements. Check Numbers 79999 thru 80175, totaling $665,794.38.

In addition to Superintendent Suzanne Dickens, board members present were Michael Cottrill, Thomas Nunnery, Randy Searls, Dale Shobe, and Matthew Thompson.

The Mason County Board of Education will meet again at 6 p.m. tonight, June 19, at the Mason County Career Center for a Policy/Regular Business meeting.
