POINT PLEASANT — “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
Romans 12:12 is one of the many verses in the Bible that help guide Christians on their faith, and tells them to turn to the power of prayer. On Thursday afternoon, many local residents did just that, and attended the 61st Annual observance of the National Day of Prayer at the Mason County Courthouse.
Point Pleasant Mayor Brian Billings welcomed those attending, reading the National Day of Prayer Proclamation, followed by the Cornerstone Academy Choir, led by Lora. M Davis, who performed a routine to a song titled “Like a Lion.” Also performing the National Anthem and “God Bless America” was Brooke Cromley Price, and performing “America the Beautiful” was Tim Moses.
This year’s local National Day of Prayer representatives, and their area of prayer are as follows: Government — Mike Roach, Mason County Sheriff/retired West Virginia State Trooper; Military — Timothy Plantz, Retired Veteran US Navy(1995 Sailor of the Year); Family — David Kapp, Student (Roosevelt Elementary); Unborn — Lew Nazarewycz, Mason County Right to Life; Education — Joyce Banks, Paraprofessional, Point Pleasant Intermediate School; Business — Rev. Bobby Patterson, Sr. Pastor Point Pleasant Church of God, Owner of Crow and Hussel Funeral Home; Media — Rev. Randy Parsons, former station manager Joy FM.
The National Day of Prayer predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as every first Thursday in May. The National Day of Prayer has been reported as being a part of America’s Heritage that belongs to all Americans, which provides an opportunity for citizens to pray voluntarily, according to their own faith.
