POINT PLEASANT — It certainly is all about the popular phrase “Gotta Regatta” this week in Point Pleasant.

The 21st Annual Point Pleasant Sternwheel Regatta officially kicked off Thursday. Activities included a Cornhole Tournament, Bluegrass in the Park as well as a performance from the tribute band, Beatlemania Magic.

Today’s Regatta schedule is chalk-full of events. Starting at 5 p.m., the Pet Contest will take place at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park. The Pet Contest, known as a festival favorite, features a variety of dogs in all shapes and sizes. Following the pet contest, the Annual Showboat Pretty Baby Contest will take place at 6 p.m. at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park.

The pretty baby contest, which is sponsored by the Kountry Kritters 4-H Club, will have several age divisions. One boy and one girl will be chosen from each age group: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 13-18 months, 19-24 months, three years-old, four years-old and five years-old. Those winning in the five year-old category also will be named Mister and Miss Showboat.

At 7 p.m., local vocalists will be put to the test with the WBYG 99.5 Texaco Country Showdown. The showdown will take place on the Point Pleasant Riverfront Park’s Main Stage.

“We consider the Texaco Country Showdown one of the most anticipated events in country music each year,” Tom Payne of WBYG 99.5 said in a news release. “It is an exciting community event that provides aspiring artists in our area an opportunity for state, regional and national exposure while promoting a greater appreciation of country music.”

Following the showdown, 12 finalists will be chosen to compete during the Gallia County Junior Fair, slated for Saturday, Aug. 6. Monetary prizes also will be awarded to the top three contestants, with the winner advancing to the State Competition, which will be held in Parkersburg.
