This year’s show took place on March 14 at the Capitol Complex in Charleston. FFA members Vanessa Bumgarner and Zak Davis excelled as they both placed in the top ten at the show. Bumgarner received fourth place, while Davis took home Reserve Champion honors.
Both Bumgarner and Davis also were eligible for sale. Other FFA members that participated in the competition were Wes Davis, Elizabeth Bateman, Danielle Foglesong, Shawn Absten, Brook Zink, Emily Casto, Misty Presley, Anthony Linger and Kelsey Zuspan.
According to Sam Nibert, FFA advisor, the West Virginia Ham, Bacon and Egg Show was started in 1941 as a way to exhibit quality products produced by FFA members.
In addition to the ham, bacon and egg competition, the FFA Chapter hosted their annual parent-member banquet last month. The banquet was held to recognize the members’ accomplishments. During the event, proficiency awards were presented to the following members: Caleb Leslie, Equine Science; Cooper Wilson, Grain Production; Wes Davis, Poultry Production, Agricultural Sales, Agricultural Processing and Vegetable Production; Caroline Thompson, Swine Production; Anthony Linger, Sheep Production; Kayla Thomas, Specialty Animal; Jordan McCarty, Specialty Crop and Beef Cattle Production; Josh Mattox, Turfgrass Management; Evan Wilson, Diversified Livestock; and Shawn Absten, Ag Mechanics.
Also, the Star Greenhand and Chapter Farmer awards were presented during the banquet. Both awards were given to the recipient of the degree from the previous year that exemplifies the best all around performance in FFA. Those who won the awards were Bumgarner, Star Greenhand, and Mattox, Star Chapter Farmer.
