LEON — Residents in the Town of Leon are gearing up for the municipal election.

The election, which will be in June, will include the positions of mayor and recorder as well as five council seats.

Mayor Bruce Riffle said the town currently is working to set a candidate filing deadline.

Riffle was appointed mayor after the former mayor, Roger Stover, resigned in November due to work issues. Riffle served on council before being appointed mayor, which left a vacant council seat. Council members appointed Sam Legg to fill the vacant seat during the December meeting.

According to Riffle, Legg has served on council before and is a long-time resident of Leon.

Other current council members are Terri Rymer, Crystal Cash, Mark Payne and Greg Barker. Darren Buck serves as the town’s recorder.

Leon currently is undergoing major projects, such as the sewer project. During the December council meeting, Fred Hypes of Dunn Engineering reported that plans for the sewer system are progressing well. Region II also is involved in the sewer project planning.

The town also is working on various activities and events for the year. Events Coordinator Renae Riffle organized several events last year, which included a bean dinner, Halloween at the Hall and Pictures with Santa.

Those interested in filing for candidacy may contact the Town of Leon at 304-812-7070.
