Coverage causes undue harm

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to a front-page article printed Dec. 19 in the Point Pleasant Register that I find both appalling and unjust.

I am thankful for the efforts of our state police and I realize that media are a necessity in a free society, but the coordination of the two often interferes with the idealism of “innocent until proven guilty.” I was stunned to see Steven Jordan’s picture plastered on the front page beneath headlines regarding abuse and sexual misconduct.

I am very much aware of the complaints registered against him, but any citizen can accuse another of a crime for various reasons, sometimes out of anger or often from a misunderstanding.

Of course, an investigation must occur, but until the results are confirmed does the newspaper have the right to inflict undue harm and grief to an individual and his innocent family by plastering his picture on the front page? Will you print a similar story if the charges are dropped or he is found innocent of any wrongdoing? Will that, too, make front-page news? Do you have any concern for a man’s reputation and the impacts this could have on his life?

I am well acquainted with this young man and on many occasions have witnessed his behavior as a father. His parental skills are impressive, and I, along with many others, would trust him with our own children. Please consider the fact that these are people with lives and loved ones, not just the latest news!

Sincerely,

Elaine Chandler,

Letart

I don't think the register is to blame. This is their business and they have a job to do (report news). 87% of child molesters are people you know and would never suspect. I'm glad the little girl has been taught to tell when touched inappropriately no matter who the predator. This doesn't surprise me as , the person accused has had more than one go around with the law.

I would like to comment on kdkj1717 false accusation about Mr Jordans hands being in his daughters panties. The paper DID NOT say that was the allegations brought towards MR. Jordan. It only printed allegations of him and underage sexual assault, not going into detail, which was the only thing that I feel the paper did in accordance with tasteful writing. And if you knew what you were talking about, you would know that Mr Jordan had only pinched his daughters butt in play and that when questioned, the daughter specifically said that her father had NEVER placed his hands anywhere near the inside of her panties. And if you think that this isnt over yet, then obviously your either related to the mother of Mr Jordans daughter, who needs a serious evaluation herself, or friends of the police officer who has such a hard on for Mr Jordan. Case closed!

I think the Point Pleasant register should have to run a new story on Steven since the charges have been dropped. And it should be on the very front page also. Steven Jordon is a great guy and now people no matter what will look at him differently! This whole thing sickin's me!!

I think this was a very wrong judgment and obviously if he had his hands in his daughters panties(as it read in the paper) he had them in there for a reason. Some people may think that he has walked free but I don't believe this is over yet.

Well I guess sometimes in a county where it seems Justice doesnt always prevail, this time it has. Mr Jordan has had all charges dropped due to lack of evidence, (Imagine that). Seems the prosecuting attorney had other reasons for Mr Jordan being on the stand, not the previously printed sexual assault on a minor. Now what I want to know is will the Point Pleasant Register put this interesting news on the front page so that all citizens know in the future what our court system and state police may have in store for them, even if its just a hunch. The next time it could be you. Atleast the legal system prevailed and an innocent man walked free.

I don't know anyone involved but i agree with Elaine , that it seems you are (hung out in public forum first). But with a free country we must make some exceptions.Take the evil with the good innocent than proof yourself.

IN regard to the comment wvugal wrote..I have know Elaine Chandler for quite a few years and to say that she sounds delusional of what be reality is totally all wrong. She happens to be a wonderful person. I agree with her comments to so I assume that I am just as delusional. Pictures on the front page of the local newspaper of someone who is not yet been on trial is as bad as having Nancy Grace against you. you are guilty before you are ever proven.

Obviously this person was accused for a reason. To defend someone of this character, makes you sound delusional of what might be reality.
