STEWART, Ohio — Road warriors.
The Southern softball team produced 21 hits while picking up its first road win of the 2016 campaign Wednesday night during a 15-1 decision over host Federal Hocking in a Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division matchup in Athens County.
The visiting Lady Tornadoes (3-4, 3-3) scored the first nine runs of the contest before the Lady Lancers (3-5, 1-4) came up with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 9-1 contest through four complete.
The score, however, remained that way until the top of the seventh when SHS sent a dozen batters to the plate — which resulted in six runs on seven hits and three errors.
The Purple and Gold allowed a late baserunner with one out in the seventh, but the guests recorded outs in the next two at-bats to wrap up the 14-run triumph.
Southern scored its eventual game-winner in the first inning thanks to a Paige VanMater single that plated Ali Deem. The guests added five in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth en route to their 9-0 advantage.
SHS outhit the hosts by a sizable 21-5 overall margin and committed two of the six errors in the contest. The Lady Tornadoes left eight runners on base, while FHHS stranded five on the bags.
Sydney Cleland was the winning pitcher of record after allowing one earned run and five hits over seven innings while striking out seven. Chelsea Washburn suffered the loss after allowing 15 runs, 21 hits and a walk over seven frames while fanning three.
Cleland, Deem, VanMeter, Haley Hill and Savannah Bailey each paced Southern with three hits, followed by Hannah Hill, Brandy Porter and Katie Barton with two safeties apiece.
Deem and Haley Hill led the guests with three RBIs each, followed by VanMeter and Porter with two RBIs apiece.
Deem also had a team-high three runs scored, while Barton, Savannah Bailey, Haley Hill and Sabra Bailey also scored two runs apiece for the victors.
Washburn, Mayle, Bigley, Skylar Hatfield and Brittnie Jackson had a hit each for the Lady Lancers. Hatfield scored on sacrifice fly by Jackson in the fourth.
