POINT PLEASANT, W. Va. — Cody Pittenger hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning, allowing visiting Ripley to claim a 6-5 victory over the Point Pleasant baseball team Wednesday night during a non-conference matchup in Mason County.
The host Big Blacks (5-3) led 3-0 after an inning of play, but the Vikings (5-4) countered with four runs in the top of the second for their first lead of the night at 4-3.
PPHS tied the game with a run in the fifth, then both teams traded a run apiece in the sixth to make it a five-all contest headed into the final frame.
With one out in the inning, Pittenger drove a full count offering over the right-center field wall — giving RHS a 6-5 edge.
Point Pleasant managed to get runners on the corners with two away in its half of the seventh, but a 5-3 putout ended the rally and, ultimately, the game.
Ripley outhit the hosts by a 10-7 overall margin and both teams committed two errors apiece. Each squad also stranded eight runners on base.
Cody Sockwell and Matt Richardson received a pair of two-out walks in the first inning, then Abe Stearns singled home Sockwell for an early 1-0 edge. James Littlepage followed with a walk to load the bases, then Tristan Austin singled home both Richardson and Stearns for the early 3-0 cushion.
Training 4-3 in the fifth, Derek King delivered a one-out single and advanced to third on a bunt single by Sockwell. King later scored on a sacrifice fly to right — tying the game at four.
Point headed into the sixth down 5-4, but Austin Richardson was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error — knotting the game up at five headed into the seventh frame.
Lane Casto was the winning pitcher of record after allowing one unearned run and two hits over 2.2 innings of relief work while striking out one. Sockwell took the loss after surrendering one run and one hit in 1.1 innings of relief for the hosts.
Stearns paced Point Pleasant with two hits, followed by King, Sockwell, Littlepage, Austin and Chris Lush also added a safety apiece. Austin also drove in a team-best two RBIs.
Chris Jordan and Aaron Wilkinson led Ripley with three hits each, while Pittenger added two safeties to go along with a team-high two runs scored. Anthony Jarvis and Luke Layhew also had a hit apiece for the victors. Wilkinson drove in a team-best three RBIs.
