POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A bit of a battle.

The Point Pleasant volleyball team endured 18 ties and 23 lead changes through five contested games, but the hosts ultimately held on for a 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 victory over Cross Lanes Christian on Monday night in a non-conference match in Mason County.

Both the Lady Knights (10-2) and visiting Lady Warriors (15-4) held leads in each of the five games played, and neither squad led by double digits throughout the course of the contest.

Point Pleasant never trailed en route to building a 22-16 edge in Game 1, but CLCS rallied with eight consecutive points for a 24-22 edge. Both teams traded a point apiece the rest of the way, allowing the guests to sneak away with an early 1-0 match advantage.

Cross Lanes Christian led 1-0 and 3-1 in Game 2, but the Lady Knights answered with five straight points and never looked back en route to tying the match at one with the nine-point win.

The Lady Warriors built an early 4-0 lead in Game 3 and extended it to 12-11, but the hosts reeled off six straight points and 14 of the final 24 points to claim a three-point win while taking a 2-1 match advantage.

There were five ties and six lead changes in Game 4, with PPHS establishing an early 14-12 cushion. The guests, however, reeled off six straight points and eventually held on for a three-point win — which ultimately forced a deciding Game 5.

Point Pleasant trailed 1-0 in the finale, but scored three straight points and never trailed the rest of the way. The hosts led by as many as five points on three separate occasions before wrapping things up with the four-point win.

The Lady Knights also claimed a season sweep of CLCS after posting a 3-0 road decision back on Sept. 11.

Madison Hatfield led the PPHS service attack with 15 points, followed by Peyton Jordan with 13 points and Mackenzie Freeman with 11 points.

Gracie Cottrill was next with nine points, while Olivia Dotson and Brenna Dotson respectively added five and four points to the winning cause.

Olivia Dotson recorded a team-best four service aces, while Cottrill and Hatfield had an ace apiece.

Grace McCallister led the guests with 11 service points, followed by Abi Jones and Taylor Burns with nine points each.

Point Pleasant traveled to Warren Local on Tuesday night and returns to action Thursday when it travels to Gallipolis for a non-league match against Ohio Valley Christian at 6 p.m.
