PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A weekend trip to the Steel City proved less-than-successful for the University of Rio Grande volleyball team following losses to Carlow University and Point Park University in River States Conference play.
The RedStorm dropped a tough 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 16-14) decision to Carlow on Friday night before falling 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-19) at Point Park on Saturday afternoon.
Head coach Billina Donaldson’s squad, which has now lost its last nine outings, slipped to 3-19 overall and 0-7 in conference play with the two losses.
The nine-game losing slide is the longest such stretch for the RedStorm since the 2008 campaign ended with 15 consecutive losses.
Senior Aleah Pelphrey (Piketon, OH) had 17 kills and 16 digs to lead Rio in Friday’s setback at the hands of the Celtics, while freshman Taylor Carroll (Atlanta, GA) and sophomore Patricia Dennis (Celina, OH) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Sophomore Katie Hemsley (Jackson, OH) finished with a team-best 18 digs, while freshmen Carly Shriver (Gallipolis, OH) and Macy Roell (Farmersville, OH) had 19 and 13 assists, respectively.
Kristina Hudock led Carlow with 19 kills and 11 digs, while Michaela Korna had 39 assists and 10 digs and Kassidy Dickson added 10 kills of her own in the winning effort.
Mia Marmion also had 10 digs for the Celtics.
On Saturday at Point Park, Pelphrey led Rio with six kills, while Shriver finished with nine assists and freshman Ashton Ward (Chillicothe, OH) had seven digs.
Dennis had four blocks – two solos and two assists – for the RedStorm, who finished with just two more kills (16) than it did attack errors (14).
Erica Gumz had 12 kills in the winning effort for Point Park, while Julia Menosky recorded 27 assists and four service aces.
Morgan Dangelo and Meg Reineke had 15 and 13 digs, respectively, for the Pioneers – who finished with a .307 attack percentage – and Jazlyn Rozier tallied four blocks (one solo, three blocks) in the victory.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday night when Carlow visits the Newt Oliver Arena for a 7 p.m. first serve.
