POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — Now that’s more like it.
The Point Pleasant boys soccer team snapped a three-match winless skid on Saturday following a 3-0 victory over visiting Shady Spring in a non-conference contest at Ohio Valley Bank Track and Field in Mason County.
The host Black Knights (6-3-1) dominated the game from start to finish after amassing a 32-4 advantage in total shots, which included a sizable 21-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Red and Black built a 2-0 halftime lead on the strength of a pair of early goals.
Braxton Watkins-Lovejoy sent a corner kick in front of the SSHS goal, and Alex Carlisle struck the pass with his head just before it hit the ground. Carlisle’s shot went under a diving keeper and into the goal, giving PPHS a 1-0 cushion just nine minutes into regulation.
Garrett Hatten and Cole Walker connected on the second goal after Hatten beat a defender on the end line and dropped a pass back to the center 18-yard line. Walker came flying in and booted the pass towards the top right corner and into the net.
Walker’s goal came in the 15th minute, allowing the Black Knights to secure a two-goal cushion headed into the intermission.
Hatten tacked on the final goal in the 66th minute after dribbling through three defenders, turning a corner and got a point-blank shot on the Tiger keeper. Hatten’s shot went on the near-side post, wrapping up the 3-0 decision.
The Black Knights — who posted their sixth shutout of the season, including one scoreless tie — claimed a 5-3 edge in corner kicks and also committed eight of the 18 fouls in the contest.
Zach Rediger made three saves in net for the hosts.
After the game, PPHS coach Chip Wood was pleased with the overall performance by his squad.
“We played a very business-like game and controlled a huge portion of the game,” Wood said. “We took advantage of our ability to control the game to work on some things we might do later in the season. It was good to get back in the win column after a rough week.”
Point Pleasant traveled to Rock Hill on Monday night and returns to action Thursday at Huntington. The Black Knights also host Warren on Saturday.
