Lady Lancers fend off River Valley


BIDWELL, Ohio — Sooner or later, something’s got to give.

The River Valley volleyball team battled closely with non-conference guest Federal Hocking on Wednesday night in Gallia County, but the Lady Raiders ultimately fell in straight games for their sixth consecutive setback.

River Valley (2-7) recorded four kills, three aces and two blocks in the opening game, but wound up dropping the game by a 25-17 count.

The second game was the Lady Raiders’ best, as they marked six kills and two aces. Federal Hocking claimed the second game by a narrow 25-23 clip, moving ahead 2-0 in the match.

With a four kills and a pair of ace in the third game, the Lady Raiders fell by a 25-17 count, giving the Lady Lancers a 3-0 sweep.

Jessica Roush led the Silver and Black with six service points, including one ace. Rachel Horner, Carly Gilmore, Jaden Neal each had five points, with three aces by Horner, two by Gilmore and one ace by Neal.

Kelsey Brown finished with four service points and one ace in the setback, while Isabella Mershon contributed two points to the Lady Raider cause.

At the net, Gilmore led the hosts with five kills and two blocks. Neal had three kills in the match, Horner added two kills and one block, while Caterina Gattinara finished with two kills. Brown marked one kill and one block for the hosts, while Madison Tabor chipped in with one kill.

Neal came up with a team-best five digs for the Lady Raider defense, while Mershon posted a team-high eight assists.

River Valley will try to avenge this loss in the rematch, on Sept. 23 in Stewart. After a trip to Athens on Thursday, the Lady Raiders will return home on Tuesday for a showdown with Meigs.
