MERCERVILLE, Ohio — The Rebels are undefeated on their new field.

That’s because the South Gallia High School baseball team, playing its inaugural game on its new diamond at SGHS on Wednesday, rallied for a 13-12 slugfest victory over visiting Federal Hocking.

And, speaking of victories, Wednesday’s win was only South Gallia’s second in the past three-plus seasons.

The Rebels, which went winless in 2014 and 2015, also defeated Federal Hocking last season for their first win in three years.

With the wild triumph, South Gallia is now 1-17 — and 1-12 in the Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division.

The loss left the Lancers at 1-16 — and 1-11 in the league.

Despite only getting six hits, the Rebels took advantage of several free bases.

They drew 10 walks, got hit by a pitch once, and scored 10 unearned runs on the aid of eight Federal Hocking errors.

Federal Hocking had twice as many hits, was walked five times and twice hit by pitches, and scored nine unearned runs off four South Gallia miscues.

Colton Coughenour gained the pitching victory for the Rebels, working the first six innings and allowing nine runs on 10 hits and four walks.

Only three of those nine runs were earned, as he also struck out six.

Brandon Rutt pitched the final frame, and despite giving up three unearned runs on two hits, got the necessary three outs for the win.

Dillon Wilfong started on the mound for the Lancers and suffered the pitching loss, allowing 10 runs on four hits with six walks.

Wilfong struck out three, as only three of the runs he allowed were earned.

Chase Reed relieved Wilfong for the final three innings, giving up three unearned runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

South Gallia garnered two runs in its initial at-bat, but the Lancers reeled off eight markers in the top of the second.

But back roared the Rebels with two runs in the second to trim the deficit to 8-4, followed by six more in the third to take a 10-9 advantage.

The Rebels then added what proved to be critical points in the fourth and sixth —crossing once in the fourth and twice in the sixth to lead 13-9.

The Lancers got three more runs in the top of the seventh, but Rutt shut the door for the Rebels’ first win.

Reed was 4-for-5 to lead the Lancers, scoring three runs and driving in one.

Levi Walters paced the Red and Gold with two hits, while Coughenour, Cory Bryan, Austin Stapleton and Harley Lay landed one apiece.

Joey Woodall wound up with two runs batted in.

The two teams will meet again on Monday at Federal Hocking.
