COAL GROVE — Finally, the Gallia Academy Blue Devils delivered the sting on the host Hornets.

Spearheaded by stymieing Coal Grove to a mere two free throws in the fourth quarter, Gallia Academy amassed a 58-40 Ohio Valley Conference boys basketball victory on Monday night.

The contest was a makeup matchup from Jan. 6, when it was postponed due to inclement weather.

For the Blue Devils, battling illness and injury, they were playing their third game in four days —part of four in five nights given Tuesday’s tilt against visiting Jackson.

Gallia Academy held a slim 12-11 lead following the opening quarter, then extended the gap to 33-23 at halftime — thanks to a 21-12 second stanza.

Coal Grove sliced the deficit in half to 43-38 following the third, but the Blue Devils dominated the fourth frame 15-2.

The Hornets failed to make a field goal, and were just 2-of-5 from the free-throw line.

With the win, the Blue Devils raised their record to 14-6 — and upped their OVC tally to 9-4.

Coal Grove fell to an opposite 4-9 in the league, part of 8-13 overall.

Justin Peck paced the Blue Devils with 15 points — on seven total field goals and 1-of-3 free throws.

He scored five in the pullaway fourth, while GAHS made 6-of-9 free throws in the frame.

As a team, Gallia Academy made 9-of-14 from the stripe for the game.

Zach Loveday, on five deuces, and Evan Wiseman — with four field goals including a three-pointer — followed Peck with 10 points apiece.

Cory Call chipped in six points on two baskets and 2-of-2 foul shots, while Blaine Carter —on a bucket and 3-of-4 free throws —finished with five.

Kaden Thomas tallied a field goal and 2-of-2 free throws, Dondre Armstrong and Gage Harrison hit a three-pointer apiece, and Miles Cornwell converted a field goal for Gallia Academy.

The Blue Devils held a 23-15 advantage in total field goals, as both squads sank three threes.

Mark Sites scored a dozen points, including eight in the 15-10 third period, to pace the Hornets.

Jeb Jones, on three buckets and 3-of-4 free throws, notched nine.

Gallia Academy closes out the regular season on Friday night, when it plays host to Portsmouth in the OVC.
