ALMA, Ohio — Two wrestling programs — in their infancy — competed quite well on Wednesday.

That’s because the first-year South Gallia Rebels and the second-year Eastern Eagles were among the 10 squads which participated in the Huntington Holiday Classic — which was held at Huntington High School in Ross County.

The Rebels placed wrestlers in half of the 13 weight classes, and had three take top-10 spots in both of the two heavyweight divisions.

Spearheaded by a pair of second-place finishers, the Rebels were sixth with 145 points.

Eastern, on the other hand, earned places in eight of the weight classes —including two in the top eight in the 220-pound weight.

The Eagles amounted 122 points to place eighth, as three Eastern grapplers captured third-place efforts.

There were no wrestlers competing in the 113-pound weight class, as Eastern and South Gallia did not place any individuals in the 120, 138 and 152-pound groups.

The top three teams were all separated by 10 points, as Ashland (Ky.) amassed 234 points to claim the championship.

The Tomcats clipped host Huntington (233 points) by a single marker, as Zane Trace — which sent only two of its starters —finished third with 224.

Fairland (171) edged Adena (170) for fourth, with Jackson (140) — which was its junior varsity club competing — sandwiched between South Gallia (145) and Eastern (122).

South Point with 33 points and Ironton with 25 rounded out the team scoring.

The Rebels’ weight-class runner-ups were Chad Bostic at 170 and Izak Luther at 182.

Troy Watson at 126 and David Kuhn at heavyweight were third, as Virgil Watson was ninth at 220 — while Chayce Pearson was 10th.

Kyle Northup was fourth at 132 and Justin Butler fifth at 145, while Caleb Neal (sixth), Wyatt Rapp (seventh) and Jacob Neal (eighth) all notched places for South Gallia at heavyweight.

For the Eagles, Eion Marcinko (106), Dillon Aeiker (132) and Addie McDaniel (170) all finished third.

Daniel Harris (145) and Caden Goff (160) both placed fourth, while Gavin Mullen — at 195 pounds —was fifth.

Eastern’s pair of placers at 220 were Trenton DeLaCruz (fifth) and Sarah Bunce (eighth), while Nathan Litchfield at heavyweight was ninth.
