GALLIPOLIS, Ohio — A good start led to a better finish for the Ohio Valley Christian girls basketball team Friday night during a slim 31-28 victory over visiting Ironton Saint Joseph in a non-conference matchup in the Old French City.

The Lady Defenders (1-4) picked up their first victory of the 2016-17 campaign, thanks in large part to a solid first half showing that resulted in a double-digit halftime lead for the hosts.

OVCS got five points from Rachel Sargent as part of a 12-4 first quarter surge, then Sargent scored four of the Lady Defenders’ seven points in the second canto as the hosts made a 7-4 run to secure a 19-8 advantage at the break.

The Lady Flyers (3-3), however, made things very interesting down the stretch as the guests went on a 10-7 third quarter run to close to within 26-18 headed into the finale.

Morgan Turner hit a pair of trifectas as ISJHS made a 10-5 surge down the stretch, but Sargent connected on 5-of-8 free throws to secure the Lady Defenders’ first triumph of the year.

Sargent led Ohio Valley Christian with a game-high 18 points, as well as six rebounds and six blocked shots. Katie Bradley was next with four markers, while Cori Hutchison, Kristen Durst and Emily Childers also added three markers apiece for the victors.

Childers also had six rebounds and a team-best two steals for OVCS, which committed 18 turnovers and finished the night 7-of-10 at the free throw line for 70 percent.

Turner led Ironton St. Joe with 11 points, followed by Kaitlin Sheridan with seven points and Ashley Bartram with six markers.

Ashlee Blankenship and Megan Riley completed the ISJHS scoring with two points each. The guests were 6-of-14 at the charity stripe for 43 percent.
