IRONTON, Ohio — When it comes to Ohio Valley Conference championships, the Blue Angels are batting 1.000.
The Gallia Academy volleyball team earned its second outright OVC championship in as many chances, on Tuesday night in Lawrence County, as the unbeaten Blue Angels claimed a 3-0 sweep over host Ironton.
The Blue Angels (21-0, 13-0 OVC) — who are ranked 11th in the final Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll — led early in the opening game, but Ironton (15-6, 8-5) took the advantage at 5-4. GAHS immediately took the lead back as part of a 6-0 run and the guests never trailed again, on their way to the 25-16 victory.
The Lady Fighting Tigers claimed the opening point of the second game, but once GAHS took the lead at 2-1, the Blue Angels never trailed again. GAHS also won the second game by a 25-16 count, moving ahead 2-0 in the match.
IHS jumped out to a two-point lead, early in the third game, but Gallia Academy took the advantage at 6-5 and led the rest of the way, to the 25-14 win.
Dating back to last season, GAHS has now won 23 consecutive regular season matches, and 14 straight OVC matches. All 14 of the Blue Angels league wins in the streak have been straight-games victories.
GAHS senior Jenna Meadow led the hosts with 13 service points, including two aces. Ryleigh Caldwell was next with 10 points and three aces, followed by Brooke Pasquale with six points and three aces. Grace Martin and Alex Barnes both finished with five points and one ace, while Carly Shriver chipped in with four points.
