POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — The shutout streak is over, but a win is a win.
The Point Pleasant boys soccer team finally surrendered a goal in a victory this season after claiming an 8-1 decision over visiting St. Marys on Saturday in a non-conference friendly at Ohio Valley Bank Track and Field in Mason County.
The Black Knights (6-9-1) had posted shutouts in their previous five victories, and the hosts were well on their way to a sixth after establishing a 4-0 halftime advantage.
PPHS pulled most of its starters early in the second half, which may have aided the Blue Devils (3-13) in their lone goal — which came in the 47th minute following a breakaway on a defensive breakdown.
Point — which led 6-0 before the St. Marys goal — followed with two more goals and had a total of five different players score goals in the triumph.
Austin Adams started the scoring just 44 seconds into regulation after taking a pass from Alex Lenkov and converting a breakaway goal for a 1-0 edge.
Lenkov followed with a goal in the second minute after converting a breakaway goal on a setup pass from Alex Carlisle for a 2-0 cushion.
Austin Nott added back-to-back goals that doubled Point’s lead out to 4-0. Lenkov assisted on the Nott goal in the 20th minute, then Adams assisted on the Nott goal in the 30th minute — giving the hosts a four-goal cushion at the break.
Lenkov tacked on his second goal of the game 32 seconds into the second half, with Adams assisting on the score. Adams added his second goal of the night after dribbling around the keeper in the 45th minute, with an assist going to Lenkov, for a 6-0 cushion.
Garrett Hatten netted a pass from Justin Staats in the 58th minute for a 7-1 edge, then Jacob Bryant tacked on the final goal in the 70th minute after netting a pass from Justin Cornell from 14 yards out.
