MASON COUNTY — This past weekend, members of the Wahama White Falcon Band traveled to Glenville State College for the Inaugural West Virginia Marching Band Invitational where they received numerous awards for their adjudicated performance.

According to White Falcon Band Director Darren Jackson, Wahama placed first in band, percussion, and field commander, Amy Lewis. The band also received first place music, first place marching, and second place general effect. The White Falcon band was also named third runner-up to Division II Grand Champion, as well as receiving a check for $500 for placing first in their class.

Jackson stated this competition was organized differently than most in the state and bands were placed into classes based on school size, not band size. 21 bands competed on Saturday and as a result of this arrangement, Wahama competed and won over bands, such as Magnolia who had 60 members, nearly double the size of the White Falcon Band. Jackson also said Wahama beat several bands in the class above them, which is how they were named third runner up to Division II Grand Champion.

According to Jackson, another highlight of the day was the full band retreat. After the final band performed, all members in each band paraded onto the field to play the state song “West Virginia Hills” as one large ensemble. Jackson also said it was an honor for Wahama to play under guest conductor and Wahama Alumna, Senator Karen Facemyer.

Jackson also stated Facemyer recently help secure a grant from the West Virginia Development Office and the Governor’s Community Participation Grant Program, which was used to purchased two new trophy cases. Jackson and the band also wished to express their gratitude for Facemyer’s help.

Previously, the White Falcon band received first in band, percussion, color guard, and field commander after competing at Point Pleasant’s Battle of the Bands.
