MASON — For those following the advice of Mary Poppins, locals now have a regular place to visit for their extra dose of sugar and sweets.

A fairly new establishment, Handmaid Sweets and Eats is owned and operated by Christina Rickard of New Haven and offers a variety of baked good and treats made fresh daily including donuts, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, muffins, and cinnamon rolls. Rickard also makes custom ordered cakes.

In addition to baked goods, the bakery also offers a variety of beverages including coffee, cappuccino, tea, lemonade, milk and chocolate milk, pop, and juice, as well other food items including hotdogs and chips.

Rickard spoke on the beginnings of this bakery, saying she has always been interested in crafts and making things and she has always had a love of baking. Rickard said she opened the bakery in August and business has been picking up, saying her weekends are already booked until May when it comes to custom ordered cakes.

“It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do,” Rickard said.

Handmaid Sweets and Eats is located at 1019 2nd Street in Mason and the hours of operation are as follows: Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The bakery is closed Sunday and Monday.
