MASON — A local group is once again taking a swing at wiping out cancer but needs the community’s help.
Charlie’s Angels, a group of local volunteers who have raised well over 100,000 in the fight against cancer, is hosting its biggest fundraiser of the year soon - the Charlie’s Angels Golf Benefit on Saturday, June 8 at Riverside Golf Course in Mason.
There are two registration times, one at 6:45 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. start and a 1:15 p.m. registration for a 2 p.m. start. Currently there are still 20 team slots available and there is a need for hole sponsorships and door prizes.
This year, Charlie’s Angels will be donating 50 percent of the tournament proceeds to the American Cancer Society and 50 percent to the Angela “Charlie” Lilly Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The fund is being established in honor of Angela “Charlie” Lilly who died in 2005 from breast cancer at 38 years old which was a devastating loss to her family. Charlie battled cancer for three years before passing away and was a local teacher, mother, daughter, sister and friend to those who knew her. According to Wendy Lilly, Charlie’s sister, once the scholarship fund is endowed it will be used to award an annual scholarship to a Mason County resident who will be pursuing a degree in education.
The popular golf tournament began in 2008 with last year’s tournament clearing $20,229.75 with 75 percent of that total ($15,171.75) going to ACS and 25 percent ($5,057.25) going to the Angela “Charlie” Lilly Community Foundation.
Wendy gave credit to many friends, family members and those from the community who always help make the tournament a success.
As for this year’s tournament, it is rain or shine, a four person scramble, shotgun start. Handicap minimum of 40/team. Persons 60 and over golf from red tee. Entry fee is $75 per person, $300 per team. Fee for one team and sign on the tee box is $400. Hole sponsorship only (sign only) fee is $150. Entry fees must be received by May 24 to hold reservations.
