The Mason County Commission recently sunk $56,000 in the refurbishment of the public basketball courts near Point Pleasant Intermediate School. The courts reopened this week. PPHS Basketball Coach Josh Williams hopes to eventually start an outdoor, summer basketball league at the courts.
POINT PLEASANT — Taking a cue from Kenny Rogers, Joan Rivers and Cher, the public basketball courts near Point Pleasant Intermediate School have received a facelift.
The courts reopened to the public this week after the Mason County Commission invested $56,000 in the project which included tearing up the old court and basically starting from scratch due to an unstable surface. After the surface was stabilized, a new court was built, paved and painted with four, new breakaway rims put in place.
On Tuesday, Mason County Commission President Rick Handley met at the courts with new PPHS Basketball Coach Josh Williams and some of his players for the upcoming season. Williams remarked he used to play on the old courts when he was younger and was impressed with the facelift. Now, his players are breaking in the new facility and getting in extra practice time on the courts.
Williams said he hopes to start a summer basketball league open to young people, and adults, from not only Point Pleasant but from across the county. Instead of an indoor league, the league would gather outdoors at the new courts, allowing kids of various ages to develop their skills and allow adults who once loved the game to have a place to shoot some hoops.
Eventually, Williams has a goal of coordinating these league games under the lights at the courts - games the public can attend at what is now a revitalized venue in Mason County.
As for his upcoming “freshman” season as the new varsity basketball coach at PPHS, Williams said he feels he has a team with a lot of depth which is going to be very competitive.
Again, the courts are now open though no skateboarding or rollerblading are permitted to cut down on wear and tear of the new surface.
