POINT PLEASANT — Relay for Life often brings people together and this year, a unique Relay event will bring together people willing to part with their treasurers for a good cause.
Jessica Hitt and Beth Cochran are the daughters of the late Brenda Hamm, who died in a car accident in 2008. Brenda was a Longaberger Consultant and had a huge inventory of Longaberger items. It was Brenda’s wishes that this estate of Longaberger items be given to a good cause.
Enter Lauren Lanier, a senior Point Pleasant High School Student who has a Relay team called “Lauren’s Friends For A Cure.” Lauren, along with her best friend Lori Wooten, also a senior at PPHS, have worked for two years to raise money for Relay For Life and this year the whole team is banding together to organize a major yard sale starting at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 5 at the First Church of God Activity Building at 2417 Jefferson Ave.
Though the yard sale started off with ordinary items like clothing, toys, household items and other miscellaneous goodies - thanks to Brenda’s two daughters, the sale will be a major Longaberger event.
Jessica and Beth decided to honor their mother’s memory by donating them to Lauren to sell at her yard sale that is raising money for the American Cancer Society - every last penny of anything sold on Saturday goes to Relay for Life.
Lauren, has worked for weeks looking up the hundreds of these Longaberger items on EBay to get the going price for each item. She and Lori hope that the community will come to the indoor fundraiser in her church youth building to buy all the hundreds of Longaberger pottery, baskets, wrought iron, liners, ornaments, wooden lids, purses and accessories. Again, every last penny will go to the American Cancer Society to help with research and the many programs they offer to everyone battling this horrible disease.
Lauren knows about battling cancer and has a passion for Relay for Life because she was diagnosed with melanoma at 15 years of age and now speaks to local students and also schools across the state, as well as many other groups and organizations, regarding skin cancer, sun safety and the importance of not using a tanning bed.
This year’s Mason County Relay For Life will be at 6 p.m., June 16 at PPHS.
