POINT PLEASANT — Here she comes, Young Miss West Virginia.
While this phrase traditionally alludes to Miss America, this amended version is sure to be common among some Mason County residents. Competing against 20 other contestants at the Pullman Plaza in Huntington, 13 year old Point Pleasant local Jocelynn Frye-Wilson was recently crowned Young Miss West Virginia.
Frye-Wilson competed in this State Pageant as part of the Pure American Girl (PAG) pageants. PAG is a Christian based pageant that works to promote values of good self-esteem and self-confidence in women and girls of all ages. They also encourage good sportsmanship and emphasize good interview and public speaking skills.
This pageant also isn’t Frye-Wilson first competition. She has also been named 2012 Teen Miss TNT, and 2011 Miss River Valley. She began entering pageants at the behest of her friends and family. She said her friends talked her into entering, her mother did some research on the pageants, and over the years she has grown to like them.
Frye-Wilson went on to discuss why she liked entering the pageants. She said she gets to meets people from different counties and states throughout the competitions, and she just gets to have fun. Now that she has been crowned “Young Miss West Virginia,” Frye-Wilson gets to compete against nine other states at nationals from July 29-August 2, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
“I’m just honored and happy that I can compete at nationals,” Frye-Wilson said.
Like most pageant contestants, Frye-Wilson also has another reason why she competes in pageants. Pageant contestants normally have some kind of charity or organization they work for or try to bring awareness to. Frye-Wilson was a friend of Andrea Bailes, who was killed by a drunk driver in Nov. 2011, and she competes to help bring awareness to Andrea’s Law, a piece of legislation that would enforce stricter penalties for drinking and driving.
Frye-Wilson plans to continue entering pageants in the future, and someday may even goes as far as Miss America.
“I would like to, I don’t know if I would,” Frye-Wilson added about someday entering the Miss America Pageant.
