POINT PLEASANT — On Saturday, May 11, local residents have an opportunity to fight hunger without leaving their homes.
Residents can “Stamp Out Hunger” in Point Pleasant during the annual food collection organized by the U.S. Postal Service and National Association of Letter Carriers. This is the 21st year that this long-standing event in Point Pleasant, and across the nation, will occur in an attempt to help those in need not overseas but right here at home. All proceeds collected by local carriers will go to a local food pantry.
Those wishing to donate to the Stamp Out Hunger food drive can simply fill a bag with non-perishable food items and leave it where your letter carrier normally delivers your mail. Items can include canned soup, canned fish and meat, canned vegetables, fruit, and juices, boxed goods, such as cereal, and pasta and rice and more. However, letter carriers cannot accept any expired items for obvious safety reasons.
On Wednesday, Mayor Brian Billings presented Point Pleasant Letter Carrier Mark Georgi with a proclamation from the City of Point Pleasant supporting this annual event.
Last May, letter carriers across the country collected 70.7 million pounds of food. This was the ninth consecutive drive surpassing 70 million pounds. The total donations received nationally since the drive began in 1993 is at nearly 1.2 billion pounds of food.
