GALLIPOLIS FERRY — Slide to the left, slide to the right.

A popular request at parties and proms, the Cha Cha Slide has been classified as a contemporary American line dance with called instructions. Since September 19, 2000, DJ Casper, or Mr. C the Slide Man, has been guiding dancers of all ages through this routine simply for the fun of it, but on Wednesday morning, the students of Beale Elementary School used the Cha Cha Slide as a way to stay active and healthy as part of the West Virginia Department of Education’s Let’s Move! West Virginia Active Schools Campaign.

Around 315 students, along with their teachers and a few parents, filed out of the school and into the block-off parking lot and performed the Cha Cha Slide. Beale Elementary Principal Pat Brumfield also said the kids have been looking forward to this day, and it that Beale Elementary plans to continue with this program next year.

Brumfield went on to discuss what the students normally do everyday at either recess or during their physical education classes to stay active and healthy. In addition to participating in this program, Brumfield stated the students walk at least 10 minutes each day to help them stay active. She went on to say that in preparation for this day, they went over the Cha Cha Slide with the students during their physical education class the past few days for any who were unfamiliar with the dance.

“You did a great job,” Brumfield said to the students. “We always want to move, be healthy and be happy.”

According to the West Virginia Physical Activity Plan website, Ashton Elementary and Hannan Junior/Senior High School were also among the 264 West Virginia Schools who participated in the Cha Cha Slide on Wednesday.

A press release from the state board of education stated that physical education programs can contribute to students’ regular participation in physical activity and can increase moderate to vigorous physical activity. The goal of this program is to help children find a physical activity, such as dancing or playing a sport, thy can enjoy just as much as watching television or playing a video game. Given that children spend a great amount of their time at school, it can be a great place for the student to get a portion of the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day.
