MASON COUNTY — Mason County has a new sheriff, prosecutor and county commissioner with state delegates and senator still undecided at press time.

In one of the most closely watched races, Democrat Greg Powers defeated Republican Gordon Clark in the race for county sheriff but only by 168 votes. This translated into Powers getting 50 percent of the vote and Clark getting 49 percent. Last night, staff from Mason County Clerk Diana Cromley’s office reported there are provisional ballots which have yet to be counted in that final total from Tuesday night. Just how many provisional ballots remain will not be known until some time Wednesday and these ballots won’t be counted until the official election canvas at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13.

In the race for Prosecuting Attorney, Republican Craig Tatterson won, receiving 5,945 votes while Democrat Bryan Cromley received 3,635 votes. Current Prosecuting Attorney Damon Morgan did not seek reelection.

With outgoing County Commissioner Bob Baird’s term ending on Dec. 31, this left his seat up for grabs which will now be filled by fellow Republican Tracy Sturgeon Doolittle. Doolittle received 5,811 votes to Democrat Mickey Whalen’s 3,755 votes.

Incumbent Assessor Ron Hickman (D) was also reelected, receiving 6,905 votes with Republican challenger Amanda Cadle receiving 2,717 votes.

Also, running unopposed were Magistrates Gail Roush (R) and Cheryl Miller Ross (D). Roush received 6,676 votes and Ross received 6,683 votes. Running unopposed for Surveyor was John M. Persinger (D) who received 7,819 votes.

When it came to the race for the West Virginia House of Delegates 13th and 14th Districts, the only numbers available at press time were from Mason County. In the race for 13th district delegate in Mason County, Scott Cadle (R) led the pack with 2,867 votes, followed by Incumbent Brady R. Paxton (D) with 2,189 votes, Brian “Scotty” Scott (R) with 1,653 votes and Incumbent Helen Martin (D) with 1,425. There are two seats up for grabs in the 13th district which includes precincts in not only Mason but Putnam and Jackson counties.

In the race for 14th district delegate in Mason County, Jim Butler (R) received the most votes with 2,555 compared to Jimmie Wood, Jr’s (D) 2,332 - a difference of 223 votes. The 14th district includes precincts in not only Mason but Putnam counties. There is one seat up for grabs in this race.

In the race for state senate in the fourth senatorial district, Democrat Mike Bright won Mason County with 5,367 votes, with Mitch B. Carmichael (R) pulling in 3,948 votes. The fourth senatorial district includes not only Mason County but sections of Putnam, Jackson and Roane counties.

Again, the final numbers from other counties in the races for delegates and state senator were not available at press time Tuesday night but will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Point Pleasant Register and on www.mydailyregister.com as soon as they are available.
