POINT PLEASANT — Brother, can you spare a coat?
The Point Pleasant American Legion Ladies Auxiliary #23 is asking just that question.
For the first time, the auxiliary is organizing a winter coat drive for children and adults. Lightly used and new coats are being collected at the American Legion on Second and Main St. just inside the entrance.
The lightly used coats will be professionally cleaned by Duke Cleaners with owner Mike Grubb donating this service to the auxiliary at no charge.
When the ladies decided to take this on, they got in contact with Mason County Schools as well as WBYG and have determined at least 400 coats are needed by the residents they know of in the county. So far, the donation box at the legion is getting full but it’s nowhere near 400 coats.
This coat drive is for anyone in need. Members of the auxiliary said they took on this project because people have the misconception the group only benefits veterans but that’s not true and the coat drive would help benefit, and reach, the whole community.
Going without a good winter coat is sadly becoming a reality for many in the community when money and food are scarce for some residents. How many times have you seen a person wearing layers of shirts or a kid wearing just a hoody on a cold morning waiting on the bus? Maybe they aren’t wearing what they have on out of choice but because they have no choice. The ladies of the auxiliary hope to help that situation.
