POINT PLEASANT — On Thursday evening, several local students were recognized in front of the Mason County Board of Education.
Several Mason County students recently participated and placed in the 2012 West Virginia State Social Studies Fair, and they were presented with plaques during board meeting. Placing first in Division II, in Sociology, with a project titled “Legends of the Tooth Fairy,” was Kylee Neal. Placing first in Division II, in World History, with a project titled “Basketball History,” was Noah Litchfield and Bryton Grate. Placing first in Division III, in State and Local Studies, with a project titled “Lewis Childers,” was Adrianna McCoy.
Placing second in Division I, in Economics, with a project titled “Little Debbie: America’s Sweetheart,” was Carlee Sang and Taylor Tatterson. Placing second in Division I, in State and Local Studies, with a project titled “Moundsville State Penitentiary,” was Haley Milhoan and Morgan Miller. Placing second in Division II, in Sociology, with a project titled “A Day in the Life of Teen Suicide Victims,” were Gretchen Nibert, Sydney Crawford, and Samantha Atkinson.
Placing second in Division III, in Economics, with a project titled “Manure to Electricity,” was Derrick Jackson. Receiving an honorable mention, in Division III, in U.S. History, with a project titled “What Made Elizabeth Peabody Somebody,” was Mary Grace Workman.
“It was nice to recognize the students,” Superintendent Suzanne Dickens commented.
Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School Principal William Cottrill, and Mario Liberatore with Ohio Valley Bank also spoke to the board on the new concessions stand, restroom, and tennis facility plans for Point Pleasant Junior/Senior High School.
“We are ready to go,” Cottrill said. He continued, saying there was money secured to build the facilities and all they needed now was the approval of the board. Liberatore also discussed the possibility of naming the tennis facility, and the board commented that an item concerning the naming of the tennis courts will be on a future agenda.
Greg Martin, Director of Curriculum/Technology for Mason County Schools, also presented board members with an overview of school policies currently on review, and stated the policies need to be in place by July 1. The board also approved a motion to review, discuss and place the following policies on a ten day comment and review period:

The board also approved the following agenda and personnel items:
Approved the request from the Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High Athletic Facility Committee, to begin construction of the proposed Concession and Restroom Building at the Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High Athletic Complex, pending final written approval from the WV State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Mason Co Health Department. Funding sources will be the Athletic Facility Committee, Athletic Boosters, Band Boosters, and PPJSHS accounts. Approved construction of the Tennis Courts as proposed by the Athletic Facility Committee at the Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High School Athletic Complex. Funding will be at no cost to the Board. Approved five extended days for the following custodians: Dorothy Coyner-Ashton Elementary, Goldie Patterson-Beale Elementary, Jimmy Walker-Hannan Jr/Sr High, Kenneth Blessing-Leon Elementary, Substitute-MCCC, Chuck Litchfield-Point Pleasant Intermediate School, Substitute-Point Pleasant Primary, Substitute-Wahama Jr/Sr High. Twenty Days for: Sherrie Thompson-New Haven Elementary, Thomas Byus-Point Pleasant Jr/Sr High.
Accepted the resignation of Brian Allen, Girls Assistant Varsity Basketball Coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, effective May 31, 2012. Approved the employment of Joshua Russell, Jr. High Head Wrestling Coach, Wahama Jr/Sr High, (pending WVSSAC Certification and WVDE Certification) Job #503-228-S, for the 2012-13 school year. County will be the funding source. Approved the purchase of a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox LS, All Wheel Drive, from Smith Chevrolet Buick, totaling $23,978.20. This vehicle will be utilized for home visits made by the Attendance Director. Step 7 will be the funding source. Approved the submitted bid of $10,000.00, from Cincinnati Floor Company, for annual screening and recoating of the secondary school gymnasium floors. Maintenance Monies will be the funding source.
The Mason County board of Education will meet again on at 6 p.m. on June 12 for a regular business meeting.
In addition to Superintendent Dickens, board members present were Michael Cottrill, Randy Searls, Matthew Thompson. Board members Dale Shobe and Thomas Nunnery were absent.
