The PVH Health Foundation recently held a reception and awards ceremony honoring the 2012 Scholars. POINT PLEASANT — A total of 15 local students were recently awarded scholarships from Pleasant Valley Hospital’s (PVH) Health Foundation to help them further their education in the medical field.
At a recent reception to honor the recipients, Jessica Dawn Wilson, a fourth year medical student at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine was named the Vitus Hartley Jr. Scholarship winner. Wilson, a Point Pleasant High School alum, received a $4,000 check and a commemorative paperweight. Wilson’s named will also be added to the plaque that hangs in the lobby just inside the main door of the hospital.
The fourteen other 2012 scholars in addition to Wilson are: Charlotte Bibbee, Mason County, Medicine (WVU); Micaiah Branch, Mason County, Medical Imaging (MU); Jordan Cullen, Mason County, Nursing (WVU); Jolisha Cundiff, Mason County, Speech Pathology (WVU); Rachael Fitzwater, Mason County, Physical Therapy (WVU); Brittany Hively, Gallia County, Nursing (Marshall MOVC); Krista Ingles, Gallia County, Pharmacy (U of Cincinnati); Brandy Karr, Gallia County, Nursing (URG); Gene Nelson, Nursing, Mason County (OU); Jessica Ryan, Gallia County, Nursing (URG); Desireé Sines, Mason County, Nursing (Marshall MOVC); Melissa Stump, Gallia County, Nursing (Marshall MOVC); Andrea VanMeter, Gallia County, Nursing (Cedarville); Tasha Wyant, Mason, Nursing (Marshall MOVC).
In presenting this year’s awards, George Miller, Chairman of the PVH Health Foundation Board of Directors, discussed the early beginnings of the group.
“Tonight we are pleased to present a total of $29, 000,” Miller said. “The winnings this year brings the total number of students assisted over the years to 186 young people from the tri-county area.”
Miller continued, discussing the purpose of awarding scholarships to local students.
“The objective of the PVH Health Foundation is to encourage students to return to the community and utilize their skills in the local area,” Miller said. “The aim of this board is to make our communities a better place to live, work and raise a family by helping local students realize their dream of becoming healthcare providers.”
Tom Schauer, Chief Executive Officer of PVH also commented on the students, stating the hospital is proud of the tradition of honoring excellence among today’s students working toward a degree in the healthcare industry.
“We are very proud to continue to serve our community,” Schauer said. “The quality of our people make our employees the very best. If you strive for quality in all that you do. Pleasant Valley or any employer will have a place for you. Always strive to be the best at what you do.”
It was reported that the Pleasant Valley Hospital Health Foundation is a non-profit corporation which established the Scholars Endowment Fund in 1988. Today, the fund has grown in principal to more than $1 million. Interest from the fund goes toward financial assistance for students majoring in a healthcare related field at a West Virginia or Ohio institution of higher learning.
