Week of the Young Child

POINT PLEASANT — Young children everywhere are being celebrated during “Week of the Young Child.”

“Week of the Young Child” started on Monday and ends on Friday with many local caregivers hosting a variety of events to celebrate young people.

Magic Years Daycare planned an entire week of activities for its children starting on Monday when Mayor Brian Billings visited the daycare to kick off the celebration, followed by local businessman Mario Liberatore stopping by on Wednesday to read a story to the kids and on Friday a balloon release is planned.

Melanie Potts, a caregiver at Magic Years, helped organized “Week of the Young Child” events at the daycare which has around 35 kids a day.

Potts said sitting aside a week each year to celebrate kids helps make the public aware that the early years of a child’s life are when they are going to observe and gain the most information. For this reason, this week Potts has planned special events for the kids which touch upon literacy, health and cleanliness and even a lesson on how everyone is different and special.

Even the balloon launch will serve it’s own special purpose with the colors of balloons specifically chosen to represent children’s issues, such as fighting child abuse. Art work from the kids is also on display at Fruth Pharmacy.

Potts said she hopes to grow the event next year and get even more of the community involved.
