ASHTON — The community is rallying around a Hannan High School Student who was severely injured in an automobile accident.
Paul Holley, 16, is a sophomore at the school and a well known player on the basketball team. Holley and a classmate were driving home from baseball practice on Feb. 27 when they were involved in an accident on Ashton Upland Road. Holley is now paralyzed from the chest down and remains in Cabell Huntington Hospital - his classmate was injured but has since been released from the hospital.
Next week, Holley, and his mother April Vickers, will make the trek to Chicago, Ill. to Shriners Hospital for Children at the facility’s spinal cord rehabilitation center. Obviously this unforeseen and tragic circumstance has brought unforeseen expenses. Raising money to help meet these expenses will allow Vickers to stay with her son in Chicago.
Kim Wilson, a friend of the family, is one of many volunteers in the Hannan community who are working together to organize fundraisers to help. Friends of the family will be doing a boot drive for donations starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 9 in front of the Point Pleasant Municipal Building. Also, a special fund for donations has been set up at all City National Bank branches, including the one in Milton and Point Pleasant. Other fundraisers are also in the works.
Also, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, friends of Holley will be at Hannan High School for a candlelight vigil. Wilson said the vigil is being held to let the family know the community is supporting and praying for them at this difficult time.
“We’re praying God give them strength for the journey he’s facing,” Wilson said.
Appearing at the vigil will be the pastor from Mt. Zion Church, as well as two of Holley’s basketball coaches and a relative of the teen will also speak.
