MASON — With the old saying “practice makes perfect” in mind, members of Wahama High School’s concert band have buckled down, and their hard work has now paid off.
After a recent performance at Blennerhasset Middle School, Wahama’s concert band has earned two superior ratings. Wahama students Amy Lewis and Jourdan Scott, a senior and sophomore respectively, spoke with the Point Pleasant Register on the ratings, saying the band performed the selections “Benjamin Franklin and the Art of Music” by Robert W. Smith and “Apparitions” by Brian Balmages. Lewis and Scott said the band had been working on this music for around a month and a half and met for rehearsals three times a week after school.
“It makes us feel proud of ourselves and our director for helping us,” Scott said about the ratings.
“It’s an improvement from last year,” Lewis added.
When playing for ratings, according to Director Darren Jackson, the band is judged on tone, intonation, ensemble effect, interpretation, and technique. Jackson also noted the band utilized crystal goblets in one of the performances to mimic Benjamin Franklin’s invention of the glass harmonica.
“I’m just really proud of them and how much they’ve grown.” Jackson said. Jackson noted the band played more difficult music this year and scored higher than last year.
In addition to Lewis and Scott, other students in Wahama’s concert band include Nikki Gibbs, Lauren Bissell, Kylie Roush, Jordon Arnold, Kristin DeVault, Cadence Weaver, Casey Tyree, Aaron Frazier, Jesse Lathey, Steven Gibbs, Clayton Gibbs, Lauren Fields, Kelsey McDaniel, Peyton Humphreys, Lakin Bissell, Deeanna Sayre, Casey Gilbert, and Keely DeWees.
In addition to Wahama, 14 bands from other high schools from surrounding counties also performed at this concert.
