NEW HAVEN — New Haven Elementary fourth graders have been doing their part to help honor veterans and will soon be sharing their work at the Capitol.
On April 9, the students, along with their teachers Rhonda Tennant and Shayla Blackshire, will be performing an original song titled “Tribute to Veterans” in Charleston.
“It all began with our Veterans Day program last November,” Tennant said. “Our music teacher, Mrs. Bond, put together the most wonderful program to honor our veterans. The school chorus performed for a packed house of veterans who were noticeably moved by this special musical tribute.
According to Tennant, Bond had the students write poems that could be incorporated into the show. Tennant said her class was very proud of their poem and decided to set it music and turned it into a song. With help from Bond, the song now has sheet music, drum accompaniment, and some marching.
Tennant also recalled that near the end of the program, one elderly veteran, with aid, rose from his wheelchair and proceeded to salute the children and their performance.
“It was powerful,” Tennant said. “I could hardly keep from crying.”
The students recently performed their song at the Outdoor Youth Expo while wearing camouflage shirts and army helmets and Tennant said they were very well received.
“My students and I are very proud of the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting our country and our song is our way of telling them so,” Tennant said.
Tennant also said they are planning to film their song and upload it to YouTube so everyone can see it.
“We are anxious to see how many ‘hits’ we can get,” Tennant added.
Tennant is also the current the WV Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Teacher of the Year, a title she received due to her promotion of patriotism and civic responsibility in the classroom and in the community.
