POINT PLEASANT — When one thinks of shadows, thoughts of puppet shows during power outages tend to come to mind, and the members of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church have taken that same concept to tell the story of Christ’s birth this holiday season.
Located in Hurricane, the Mount Vernon Baptist Church will be presenting “Shadows of Love,” which depicts the story of Christ’s birth through shadows using special lighting and a 9- by 20-foot screen, as well as music and narration, at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Main Street Baptist Church in Point Pleasant. The show will be free and is open to the public.
“This is a dramatic, multi-sensory presentation of the Christmas story, from creation to the flight to Egypt,” said Rev. Ron McClung, senior pastor at Mount Vernon, who also wrote the script for the show. “Attendees will hear, sense, and see the story in a unique way. We have worked on a silhouette drama that shows the incarnation of God into this world, using a variety of music, color, and narration.”
Reportedly, McClung originally wrote “Shadows of Love” 10 years ago as production based around the Easter holiday and has now modified it to portray the story of Christ’s birth and the Christmas holidays.
“This is a great opportunity to invite family and friends to share the joy of His love through the journey of ‘Shadows of Love’,” McClung added.
It was reported the production will include around 30 actors and singers and musical selections including “God of Wonders,” Mary, Did You Know,” “Joseph’s Lullaby,” and “My Deliverer.” The Mount Vernon choir is also under the direction of Rodney LeGrand.
“Shadows of Love” will also be presented at 7 p.m. on Dec. 19 at Judson Baptist Church on Bill’s Creek Road in Winfield, and at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22 and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church. It has previously been presented at various churches in Kentucky and Ohio where McClung has served as pastor.
