CHARLESTON — The Class A State Football Championship Wahama White Falcons were recently honored at the capitol building in Charleston.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin met the team and coaches for pictures. The team was accompanied by Delegate Scott Cadle, a Wahama graduate himself, along with Delegate Jim Butler, Delegate Brady Paxton and former State Sen. Karen Facemyer, also a Wahama graduate.

The team was presented with a special citation at the capitol which reads: “The House of Delegates of the West Virginia Legislature herby congratulates the players, coaches and managers of the Wahama High School White Falcons Football Team on their 2012 championship win.”

In recent years Wahama has compiled a 31 game regular season winning streak, and produced three straight 10 and 0 teams. In 2010 they competed for the title but fell short, and until the 2012 season had not won a state championship.

The 2012 White Falcons trailed the entire first half of the championship game and they were behind 21 to 20 in the third quarter, and 42 to 35 in overtime. Wahama scored a touchdown at the end of overtime to come within a point of their opponent. Coach Ed Cromley opted to roll the dice and go for a two-point conversion to win the game by a 43 to 42 margin. Bringing home the first ever Class A State Football Championship title to the Bend Area.

This White Falcon Team has the distinction of participating in a record-setting, most combined points, record- tying, most individual touchdown, and total touchdowns Class “A” Championship game ever. Seven members of the team were named to the 2012 Class “A” All-State Football Team by members of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association. Senior Zach Wamsley was named Captain and to the First Team-Defense. Juniors Kane Roush and Zach Killingsworth were named to the First Team- Offense. Senior Trenton Gibbs was named to the Second Team- Defense and Junior Wesley Harrison to the Second Team-Offense, while Junior Colton Neal was a Special Mention Choice. Senior Crandale Neal was an Honorable Mention selection.
