POINT PLEASANT — Other names were entered into nomination to complete the unexpired term of mayor of Point Pleasant at a special city council meeting on June 11.
Councilman Sam Juniper advised the Register that at least three items that occurred during the meeting were omitted from the story that appeared in Saturday’s Register.
Brian Billings, appointed mayor at that meeting and who has taken over duties from Mayor Leonard “Buster” Riffle, confirmed those items occurred during the meeting. Billings was still city clerk at the time, a position he resigned Friday. Riffle’s resignation as mayor was effective Saturday.
When the meeting began, Councilwoman Leota Sang read aloud a statement asking council to postpone an appointment for 30 days, to allow for parties interested in being mayor to submit their qualifications, and for council to possibly interview them before making a decision.
Her question was placed before council as a motion and voted down 7-3, with Sang, Juniper and Councilwoman Elaine Hunt voting in favor.
Riffle then asked for nominations, when Councilman at Large James Bowles nominated Billings for mayor, seconded by Councilwoman Barbara Brown. Sang nominated former mayor Ed Woomer, which was defeated 8-2 when put to a vote, and Councilman Marshall Bonecutter nominated former mayor Marilyn McDaniel, which died for lack of a second, according to Billings’ notes.
Billings’ nomination was approved 8-2. The term runs until 2012, and not 2011, as previously reported.
