POINT PLEASANT — B.J. Lloyd had Mason County's 911 system on alert Friday evening after the senior basketball star caught fire to lead the Point Pleasant Big Blacks past neighboring Wahama by a 65-45 margin before an overflow crowd at the PPHS gym.
Lloyd finished with a game high 22 points in the outing as Coach Richie Blains' Black Knights claimed its ninth straight victory on the high school basketball season. The senior backcourt star scored seven points during a 10-0 PPHS run to put the Blacks in front for good late in the third quarter before going on another seven point barrage midway through the final period to put the dagger in the visiting White Falcons hopes.
The win gives the Black Knights a season sweep over the White Falcons while PPHS extends its winning string to nine in a row for an impressive 11-4 mark on the year. Coach James Toth's Wahama cage team didn't play all that badly but the pattern of a brief stretch of costly turnovers continued for the White Falcons as they dropped to 3-12 this season.
"B.J. [Lloyd] came up with some big plays for us tonight as he has all season," winning coach Richie Blain said following the intercounty triumph. "Whether its offensively or defensively he has done it for us this year and tonight was no exception."
Lloyd came up with a pair of back-to-back steals in addition to connecting for a couple of NBA range three pointers to ignite a 20-3 PPHS run in the final quarter.
While the final 20 point margin of victory might indicate a Point Pleasant blowout win nothing could be further from the truth as the White Falcons battled the Big Blacks on fairly even terms throughout the games first three periods.
"I was pretty pleased with our play during the first three quarters," Falcon Coach James Toth stated following the loss. "Point Pleasant has a really good team that will go far in the post season and we were right there with them for nearly three quarters but we started throwing the ball away and they capitalized on our mistakes like all good teams will."
The contest was a game of spurts on the part of both teams with the Black Knights putting together a 9-0 run to begin the game in addition to a couple of 6-0 spurts, a 10-0 rally and a 20-3 run to close out the contest. Wahama, behind the play of Isaac lee and William Zuspan, was able to negate the Point Pleasant offensive spurts with a few of their own with the White Falcons erasing the Big Blacks early nine point edge before the half had ended.
Kyle Zerkle's lay-in with :38 remaining in the half knotted the score for the first time of the night at 21-21 but a jumper by Tyler Deal seconds later gave Point Pleasant a 23-21 halftime advantage.
"Wahama came in here with a good game plan and took some things away that we like to do," Blain said. "We made some adjustments at the half and we got a few stops late in the third quarter that seemed to really get us going."
The two teams traded baskets for the first four minutes of the third quarter before the White Falcons received a free throw from Zuspan and a trey by Zack Whitlatch at the 3:44 mark to claim its first and only lead of the evening at 31-28. The WHS edge proved to be short-lived however as Lloyd and Deal hit back-to-back jumpers sandwiched around a put back by Jacob Templeton to give the Big Blacks a lead it would never relinquish.
"Lloyd got hot and they forced us into committing a few turnovers at critical times in the final quarter and we simply couldn't recover" commented Toth. "We played well for three quarters but we've got to keep working and minimize our mistakes for a full 32 minutes."
Lloyd tallied 18 of his 22 point total in the second half with 12 of those coming in the final eight minutes. Tyler Deal added 17 for Point Pleasant with Templeton also reaching double figures with 11. Chris Campbell netted five points with Tyson Jones adding four, Kylenn Criste two, Drake Nolan two, and Cody Greathouse two. JeWaan Williams participated for the Big Blacks but did not score.
Wahama was led by freshman Isaac Lee with a team high 13 points with Zuspan collecting 12 and Zack Whitlatch nine. Brandon Flowers and Rodney Bragg had a bucket apiece while Matt Arnold, Tyler Kitchen and Garrett Underwood failed to score.
Point Pleasant shot 46 percent from the floor on 26 of 57 shot attempts with 13 turnovers and a 36-30 edge on the boards. Tyson Jones hauled down a game high 10 rebounds with Templeton and Campbell collecting seven each and Deal with six.
Wahama shot a dismal 30 percent from the field on 16 of 53 tries while committing 14 turnovers in the contest. Garrett Underwood led WHS in rebounding with nine while Lee grabbed eight boards for the White Falcons.
In the junior varsity contest the Little Blacks erased a 12 point Wahama led in the final period to take a thrilling 57-51 decision from the visiting White Falcons. Both Wahama and Point Pleasant return to action on Tuesday with home dates against Buffalo and Poca respectively.
Lady Eagles spoil Senior Night for Southern
RACINE — In a game that went right down to the wire, the Eastern Lady Eagles hit some key free throws to secure a 50-42 Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division win over the Southern Lady Tornadoes in Southern’s Hayman gymnasium.
It was senior night for Southern’s lone senior Emma Hunter and Tornado announcer Jordan Pickens, who received pre-game laurels for their contributions to the Southern program. Eastern’s Kayle Milan was also recognized by the host Tornadoes as Eastern’s lone senior.
Neither team could get the momentum, until the late fourth quarter when Eastern sprung away to a twelve-point advantage only to have Southern whittle it back to five before attempting one ditch run at the winners of Coach John Burdette.
Southern’s Emma Hunter hit a late three that cut it back to seven before Southern was forced to foul as the clock raced to the final buzzer. An Allie Rawson bucket from the baseline pushed the lead to nine and Southern got no closer than the 50-42 finale.
Both clubs battled hard in the first quarter, but when the dust had settled on the first period scoreboard, Eastern led by a narrow 9-8 tally. With a boost from a 6-10 stint at the foul line in the second period, Southern propelled to a 23-21 halftime lead. Courtney Thomas led the way with a five point effort, Cheyenne Dunn added five and Hunter notched a three-pointer and a free throw for four. Eastern’s Emeri Connery kept Eastern afloat with a three-pointer and three other points (six overall).
Eastern made some defensive adjustments at the half, while Southern went cold from the field. The host Tornadoes did not hit a field goal as Eastern soared to a 31-25 lead after three rounds. By midway through the fourth quarter, Eastern had stretched it out to 12 points, before Southern made a last chance bid.
Rawson finished strong with eight fourth quarter points, while Bev Maxson, Audrionna Pullins, Kayle Lawrence, and Hayley Gillian each had strong stints at the line.
Eastern was led by Rawson with 12 points and five rebounds, Emeri Connery added nine, Kasey Turley and Brooke Johnson six each, Hayley Gillian five, Bev Maxson four, Pullins four, Brenna Holter three, and Kayle Lawrence one. Southern was led by Cheyene Dunn with 15 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double, Thomas added 13, Hunter 11, Lynzee Tucker two, and Morgan McMillan one.
Southern Coach Al Crisp who saw his club struggle the last week praised his team’s effort.
“It was senior night and Emma (Hunter) stepped up and played like a true leader. It was our best all around game of the year and a great game for Emma. I am very proud of them.”
Eastern hit 17-41 overall with a 14-22 stint at the foul line. Eastern had 23 rebounds (Rawson 5, Pullins 6), 15 steals (Rawson 4, Holter 3), nine assists (Milan four), 18 turnovers, and 20 fouls. Southern hit 13 of 38 two’s and 3-6 three’s with a 13-20 effort at the line. Southern grabbed 34 rebounds (Dunn 16), 9 steals (Dunn 3, Hunter 3), 38 turnovers, two assists, and 18 fouls.
Southern falls again to Trimble
RACINE — Outscoring Southern 24-12 in the last quarter, the Trimble Tomcats completed the season sweep of the Tornadoes and hampered, if not eliminated Southern from completing a title run in the boys’ Tri-Valley Conference Hocking Division race. The Tornadoes are now 11-5, 5-3 on the season with three games remaining after the loss during Southern Elementary Night in Hayman gymnasium. The Symmes Valley game, a non-league contest, will not be made up.
In pregame ceremonies eleven Tornadoes were honored for senior night. Four Southern basketball players were recognized and played their last game — Brad Brown, Bryan Harris, Weston Roberts, and John Brauer. Other seniors honored were Emma Hunter, girls’ basketball, Jaime Warner, Cheerleader, and band members Rusty Carnahan, Kyle Goode, Drew Hoover, Steven Loane, and Jordan Pickens.
Trimble was led by Joseph Dunlap with 16 points, Adam Mulford had 14, Taylor Russell eleven, Joey Reitano nine, Chuck Love eight, Richard Drake one, Kevin Boudinot three.
Southern was led by Sean Coppick with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Bryan Harris added ten, John Brauer ten, Weston Roberts seven, Michael Manuel four, Brad Brown three, and Zach Manuel one.
Southern controlled the early part of the game. The once sleeping Tomcats, arose to a drowsy nature by half-time, and after a ten-minute intermission showed signs of gulping down a Red Bull energy drink for an aggressive second half tussle. Southern drifted in the opposite direction.
Southern pushed to a 10-8 first period lead, led by two big inside buckets from John Brauer and contributing goals from Roberts, Harris and Coppick. Southern took the early lead and never relinquished it until the final round.
Coppick had a huge second quarter as Trimble chased Southern for the duration of the canto. A series of three’s kept Trimble close (Reitano, Dunlap, Mulford) an omen that indicated “if you stay in the game, good things will eventually happen.”
Southern had its chances to blow the Tomcats away, but missed lay-ups and had a higher than average number of turnovers that wouldn’t allow them to get over the hump. Southern led 19-14, but had a turnover and missed shot. Mulford countered with a three. Southern again went up five points at 22-17 and a turnover and two misses with the benefit of a rebound set up a driver by Mulford, the score 22-19.
Coppick was near-flawless with an eight-point effort in the frame. Neither team scored for nearly two minutes late in the round, until Weston Roberts hit a pair of free throws that put SHS up 25-19. A nice Harris to Brauer connection off the fast break gave Southern a 27-19 advantage with 18 seconds left, but with three seconds before the buzzer Dunlap drilled a desperation three that winded Southern’s trip to the locker-room, the score 27-22. Instead of an eight point lead, Southern led by just five.
Southern seemed to have recovered somewhat in the third period as now Trimble seemed to be the team that couldn’t finish. Whether it was failure to execute or a well-planned effort to bait the Tornadoes, the plot thickened but in Southern’s favor.
Coppick was once again the top dog with eight points, while Bryan Harris had a pair of three-point plays, one of the old fashioned variety. Southern’s defense began to falter somewhat as Southern struggled to defend the perimeter and was a step slow defensively. Trimble gained the early bonus and went to the line 12 times in the third frame, hitting the mark six times.
As the carousel to the foul line slowed the tempo to Trimble’s liking, Southern still tried to remain rapidly upbeat. Southern led by nine points twice in the third round, but could never take the lead to double-digits. Despite Southern making several turnovers in the frame, Roberts, Harris, and Brown made some flashy passes that resulted in scores. Still, the misses and turnovers proved to be untimely. Southern led 45-37 after three rounds.
Almost as if to sense their fate, Southern’s sinking ship began an eerie creak. Dunlap opened the frame for Trimble with a tri-fecta (45-40), and immediately Southern had a game on their hands. Zach Manuel hit a free throw, then Russell and Dunlap each hit single free throws before Dunlap cranked out a three-pointer to tie the game at 5:50.
At the 5:00 mark Roberts went back door to regain the Southern lead, only to have Reitano drill a three-pointer for Trimble’s first lead at the 4:37 mark. Southern went back up on a Brauer back door lay-in, 50-49, but an old-fashioned three-point play from Mulford put the visitors up 52-50. Southern missed a couple costly foul shots, while Chuck Love came out of nowhere to drill a three pointer at the 2:30 mark, giving Trimble a 55-50 lead.
Southern twice cut it to three, but could get no closer as Trimble pulled off the 62-57 win.
Southern hit 23-42 two’s, 1-10 three’s, and 10-15 at the line. Southern had 32 rebounds (Roberts 8, Harris 8, Coppick 7), one steal, 18 assists (Brown 4, Roberts 6, Harris 4), one charge, 16 turnovers and 19 fouls. Trimble hit 11-33 two’s, 8-20 three’s (6-11 the second half). and hit 16-26 at the line. Trimble had 24 rebounds (Mulford 8, Reitano 3), 16 assists (Reitano 6, Dunlap 4), 7 steals, 15 turnovers, and 15 fouls.
The Southern reserves of Coach Kyle Wickline move to 12-3 on the season with a 41-33 win over Trimble. Southern was led by Andrew Roseberry and Zach Manuel with eight each, Jordan Taylor seven, and six each from Marcus Hill and Dustin Salser. Trimble was led by Devin Earich and Charles Kish with ten each.
Southern goes to River Valley Tuesday, then goes to Eastern Friday. Southern makes up Waterford on Tuesday, February 24.
Raiders sweep Fairland
CHESHIRE — The River Valley boys basketball team moved over .500 in Ohio Valley Conference play this season after a hard-fought 75-73 victory over visiting Fairland on Friday night.
The Raiders (7-9, 4-3 OVC) picked up their fourth win in five outings and also claimed a season sweep of the Dragons (11-6, 5-3) in the process. RVHS defeated Fairland by a 65-61 margin in Proctorville earlier this winter.
The hosts jumped out to a 23-19 advantage after eight minutes of play, but FHS managed to trim some of that lead away in the second with a 17-15 run for a 38-36 contest at the intermission.
Out of the break, the Dragons went on a furious 26-18 charge in the third quarter to take a 62-56 edge into the finale. RVHS countered with a 9-0 run over the opening 3:08 of the fourth to take a 65-64 lead.
The guests recaptured the lead (70-69) with 2:02 left in regulation, but an offensive rebound and putback by Zak Deel with 51 seconds left gave RVHS a 71-70 advantage. The hosts extended that lead to 73-70 with 27 seconds left, but a three-pointer from Chris Ward with 10.5 seconds left tie things up at 73-all.
After a River Valley timeout, the ball was inbounded to Clayton Curnutte — who dribbled three-quarters length of the floor before being tripped from behind by a FHS defender. Curnutte — with 3.7 seconds remaining — sank both ends of a double-bonus, giving the Raiders the final two-point decision.
Fairland did attempt a trifecta just before the buzzer, but there were no last-second heroics for the visitiors from Lawrence County.
Curnutte’s winning free throws capped a game-high 26-point effort for the Silver and Black. Curnutte also scored half of those markers in the fourth quarter. Zak Deel was next for RVHS with 16 points, followed by Cody McAvena with 12 and Kody Johnson with 10 markers.
Ward led the Green and White with 20 points, followed by Cole Hatfield with 15 and Zach Jordan with 14.
The Raiders return to action Tuesday when it hosts Southern in a non-conference matchup. The junior varsity game will tip-off at 6 p.m.
Marietta downs Devils
MARIETTA — Talk about a catch-22.
The Gallia Academy boys basketball team committed 27 turnovers and allowed host Marietta to shoot 51 percent overall from the field during a 65-46 setback Friday night in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League matchup in Washington County.
The Blue Devils (6-12, 2-9 SEOAL) never led in the contest, as the Tigers (12-5, 7-3 SEOAL) connected on 7-of-11 shot attempts in the first quarter to take a 16-7 advantage after eight minutes of play. GAHS did a much better job of things in the second canto, going on a 19-16 run to enter the intermission trailing 32-26.
The hosts, however, turned up the pressure in the second half — going on a 15-9 run in the third to take a 47-35 cushion into the finale. The Orange and Black started the fourth with a 14-2 run for a 61-37 lead with 3:20 left in regulation, all but securing the triumph.
The Blue and White finished the game on a 9-4 spurt to close out the 19-point outcome. The closest GAHS came after the first quarter was four points with 6:25 left in the first half. Marietta’s biggest lead of the night was 24 points.
Gallia Academy was led by the duo of Quinton Nibert and Kyle Mitchell with 11 points each, followed by Chris Armstrong and Corey Eberhard with eight markers apiece.
Anthony Tabler paced Marietta with a game-high 17 points, followed by Zane Eschbaugh with 11 markers. GAHS won the battle on the boards by a 23-22 margin.
Marietta also won the junior varsity contest by a 62-54 margin. Nate Thompson led the JV Tigers with a game-high 21 points, while Jordan Cornwell paced the Devils with 19 markers. MHS also captured the freshmen tilt with a 57-44 decision.
Flyers avenge Rebels
IRONTON — A 28-9 first half charge ultimately allowed Ironton St. Joseph to cruise to a comfortable 57-31 victory over visiting South Gallia on Friday night during a non-conference matchup in Lawrence County.
The host Flyers (8-8) stormed out to a 16-6 advantage after eight minutes of play, then went on a 12-3 surge in the second canto to take a 28-9 edge into halftime. ISJHS never let up from there, going on a 17-10 run in the third period to take a commanding 45-19 cushion into the finale.
The Rebels (9-9) managed a tie in the fourth quarter, as both teams scored 12 points to wrap up the 26-point outcome. SGHS won the first matchup between these clubs by a 68-63 margin in Mercerville.
The Red and Gold connected on just 10-of-32 field goal attempts for 31 percent, including 0-for-8 from three-point territory. St. Joe was 20-of-39 from the floor for 51 percent, including 4-of-10 from three-point range for 40 percent.
The Rebels committed 10 turnovers and were outrebounded by a 30-13 margin. The hosts committed 22 turnovers.
Jacob Watson led the Rebels with 14 points, followed by Bryce Clary with four markers. Chad Harvey had a game-high 20 markers to pace Ironton St. Joseph, while Payton Blair added eight to the winning cause.
South Gallia returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Hannan for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
Eagles fall in OT
HEMLOCK — A 12-4 surge during overtime allowed host Miller to claim its second consecutive TVC Hocking victory Friday night during a 66-58 decision over Eastern in Perry County.
Both the Eagles (8-8, 3-5 TVC Hocking) and Falcons (5-13, 2-6) battled through 13 lead changes and five ties to come to a 54-all tie at the end of regulation, but MHS led start to finish in the extra session to secure the eight-point triumph.
EHS stormed out to an 11-3 edge just 2:30 into the contest and held a 19-15 advantage after eight minutes of play, then went on a small 13-12 run in the second canto to take a 32-27 cushion into the intermission.
The Purple and White, however, erased that lead in the third stanza with a 17-9 charge, allowing the hosts a 44-41 lead heading into the finale. Eastern — which trailed 54-52 with 30 seconds left in regulation — forced overtime when Titus Pierce hit a jumper with 15 seconds left to knot things up at 54.
In the overtime, Miller connected on a perfect 10-of-10 free throw attempts to wrap up the eight-point decision. Kelly Winebrenner scored all four of Eastern’s points in the extra session. Miller also avenged a 66-24 setback to the Eagles earlier this year in Tuppers Plains.
Mike Johnson led the Green and White with 13 points, followed by Pierce with 12 points and Winebrenner with 10 markers. Jake Reynolds led MHS with a game-high 14 points.
Eastern salvaged a split on the evening with a 39-37 victory in the junior varsity matchup. Jonathan Barrett led the JV Eagles with a game-high 18 points, while Michael Gill and Michael Wilson paced the hosts with nine markers apiece.
Eastern returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Parkersburg Catholic for a non-conference tilt. The JV game will begin at 6 p.m.
